Esoteric Kanyeism is an Ultralight Beam

It has been 9 years since Bowie passed away. People have talked about the Kanye bowie connection so I just wanted to give my thoughts on it.

RE REVIEW
Title: Blockade
Artist: House On Ice
Rating: 9.8/10
Favorite song: Manifest, Catch And Throw, Ghosts, Missing The Point
Least favorite song: N/A
First half or Second half: Second half

With music made independent of a label, you usually expect something very amateurish and not cohesive, and while I do think House On Ice's sound is amateur, it adds to the charm of the album. Now House is no Will Toledo, but you can tell that when he sings, he sings with a passion that you don't often hear in other amateur artists. Not to mention, this is a pretty moving album at its core, which I'm sure was his intention.

The overarching theme in the album is one I'm sure a lot of people have heard in music, coming in age. It might have been something you've heard on Waxahatchee's Cerulean Salt, but while Waxahatchee's album was more focused on feeling you haven't grown up yet, House On Ice's approach to this album was more of a "Where did the years go" kind of vibe. I think in the current generation of aimless young adults we landed ourselves in, House shows us the perspective of the average person who continues to be nostalgic for a life that was carefree. A life that we can no longer attain, and therefore, we must have to live in these conditions, missing that life.

Other things I wanted to mention about this album, some of the transitions on here are about as smooth as you can get. The middle of the album, which is basically from Catch And Throw to Ghosts, is basically one giant song split into four parts, or three parts and an interlude if you want to get technical. The piano playing on Missing The Point, which echoes throughout the whole track, has a simple melody that manages to make you feel emotional, it manages to take you back into that place as a kid where nothing really mattered, you didn't have any responsibilities. It sounds like a very dream-like and freeing track.

In the long run, I'm sure that this album will end up being one of the best made in the 2020s, at least in my opinion. It's an album that I think will resonate with a lot of people. It's for sure worth a listen, and maybe a couple more after that.

RE REVIEW
Title: The Life of Pablo
Artist: Kanye West
Rating: 6/10
Favorite song: Highlights, Pt. 2, Famous, Fade
Least favorite song: FML, Ultralight Beam
First half or Second half: First half

Kanye West, prior to the release of Yeezus, hadn't released anything that wasn't his artistic vision, and he made no exception when it came to Yeezus. Yeezus was a masterpiece and Kanye was on track to go on a 5 album win streak, but then he released The Life of Pablo.

I think I was a bit too hard on the album before when I rated it a 4/10, but for as much as I don't hold that strong of an opinion of the album currently, this is still not Kanye's best work, far from it, to be exact. Between the first time I listened to it to the most recent time, I still don't like Ultralight Beam, FML, or Saint Pablo. I do, however, like Wolves a little more, even if Kanye abandons the effect he does on his voice in the first half of the song which made it good. Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1 & 2 are both as good as they always are, and are probably the strongest tracks on the album, but Desiigner's Panda is literally on this album for Pt. 2.

I think the reason I like Pablo more than I did a few months ago was because I gained more respect for the songs I actually liked off the album. And I think the same can be said for a lot of albums like this. I would still not recommend this to anyone wanting to get into Kanye West's music, but I wouldn't be opposed to conversing about the album with anyone.

EP REVIEW
Title: Let The Light Come In
Artist: House on Ice
Rating: 93/100
Favorite song(s): Fallen Brother, Silhouette's Prayer
Least favorite song(s): Maria
First half or Second half: Second half

I was anticipating this release as far back as April. When I had heard Blockade, which was released last year, I knew that it was a great album, and probably one of the best of the year. Since then, House had been advertising the album by using the name of it "Let The Light Come In" while using very liminal imagery to foreshadow that this EP would be what Blockade wasn't.

The liminal imagery, actually, made the EP more immersive to me. I think the general nature of the album feeling nostalgic and existential while grounded was one of my favorite feelings that I've had from music in a while. The first track, I didn't like that much, it seemed to be a song, but it was played in reverse, which left me confused, but I ultimately understood that it was part of the liminal vibe for the EP. The next song, Waste, was better, and really where the album picks up with the liminal vibe. The guitars, the sounds, all of it combined to make something that felt but didn't feel like anything, which is what I think makes something liminal.

The next two songs, which were also the final songs of the EP, Fallen Brother and Silhouette's Prayer, were definitely the highlights of the records, with House's vocals being on point and seeming to have improved from Blockade, and I think the instrumentals and his voice made the music more emotional, more nostalgic, just more. It's not something a lot of artists can do, but with this EP, I really am liking the direction that House on Ice is going in

Title: Kid A
Artist: Radiohead
Rating: 7/10
Favorite song(s): Everything In Its Right Place, Motion Picture Soundtrack
Least favorite song(s): The National Anthem
First half or Second half: Second half

If OK Computer is the most popular senior kid in a high school, then Kid A is the nerdy freshman brother who can't live up to their older sibling. Everything that Radiohead did on OK Computer gets flipped on this album, because most of it is experimental, but electronic experimental. This is a pretty good album, but saying it's as good or even better than OK Computer is stretching it.

It starts out with an absolute banger in Everything In It's Right Place, which is an excellent song, and had Radiohead gone at this same pace for the duration of the album, it could have been among OK Computer as a masterpiece. However, with the next song, the title track, Kid A, I didn't feel the same emotion as the intro track. And it didn't really end there. Most of the material on the album is good, I don't think there was a horrible awful song in here (aside from National Anthem), but it's not at the same level that OK Computer was.

Hindsight being 20/20, I don't think I would have listened to the full record if I knew most of the songs would be just okay. Radiohead may not be a prestigious name in music, but at least they can make some decent songs.

Title: OK Computer
Artist: Radiohead
Rating: 10/10
Favorite song(s): Exit Music (For A Film)
Least favorite song(s): Electioneering
First half or Second half: First half

I was a bit torn on whether or not to give this album a 10 or a 9, but seeing as how this album was really enjoyable, I decided a 10 was the best way to go. OK Computer is not a decent album, nor is it just okay, it is a great piece of music that I hope generations of people after me will listen to.

While touring for their record, The Bends, they were asked by Brian Eno (a well-known avant artist) to record a song for a charity album, and out came their song, Lucky, which would later be used for the album. The album's production, contrary to The Bends, is more experimental, which is something that the band would be recognized for, especially after this project.

I find the whole mood of the album to feel exactly like how the cover of the album is. And if I haven't said it before, it's one of my favorite things about certain albums when they can emulate feelings from an image. Most of the songs are very well-written, and looking at the recording aspect of it, it makes it very obvious that rushed production makes for great music.

This album may be an experimental mess to some, but I see it as a beautiful piece of art. And with art, there are no rules. It's best when people go to their own devices for it
