Four years sober today ❤️‍🩹

This year, in particular, has been one of the most transformative years of my life and practically every bit of it can be traced back to my decision to get sober. They say it keeps getting better, which I used to think was just something they said to get me through another day, but I am starting to think they might be right. I’ve made significant strides in my career as an attorney, I bought a house, and launched a non-alcoholic beverage company. All things I can say with certainty would not have been possible for me without sobriety.

Not just because it has given me back my time, energy, and peace of mind, but because recovery has taught me the true meaning of discipline, resilience, and patience, and has taught me to sit with and even invite in, fear, insecurity, discomfort, and change. Four years of showing up for myself, especially when I did NOT want to, has given me confidence in my ability to follow through, trust in my own judgment, and the knowledge that I can count on myself to stick with really hard things.

Most importantly and as always, I am grateful for each friend who has made sure there is a non-alcoholic option at the function before I get there. For every person I’ve crossed paths with in a meeting that has encouraged me to stay sober on days I felt like giving up. For the hundreds of conversations I now get to have with strangers at How Tea events who light up when we realize we share this experience. For the people who have offered me forgiveness, grace, and the space to grow into the person I am today. I can say with almost complete certainty that I would not be alive without those people and moments. And it is because of them, I get to live a life that is full and meaningful today.
