The White Mesa community needs your attention! ‼️ On Saturday, Ute Mountain Ute leaders held their annual spiritual walk to protest the uranium mill contaminating their Lands with radioactive waste. Many tribes from across the West came to support because mining companies are threatening their sacred Lands & waters to feed the nuclear fuel chain. This is the only uranium mill in the usa, which means toxic waste is shipped across the country (and across the world) to be stored in open pools 5 miles away from the White Mesa community. This is environmental racism & settler colonial violence. The company, Energy Fuels, has refused to build a wildlife fence, so birds & deer drink the radioactive liquid and get sick. Energy Fuels is making money from poisoning the air, water, and soil, and they want to expand their operations. Meanwhile the governor wants to build a new nuclear hub on Great Salt Lake for Trump, which would ship more toxic waste to White Mesa. On the highway. Past kids' schools and your neighborhoods. We say NO. This uranium mill needs to be SHUT DOWN. Protect White Mesa! Support tribes who are defending their Lands against these escalations. Grateful that Marsha and I were able to make it (barely 😅) to the 10th annual Prayer Walk in support of the White Mesa Utes against the Energy Fuels Uranium Processing plant, which is located just 5 miles from their community center near Bears Ears National Monument in Blanding, UT.

The entire logistics process of the uranium mining, hauling and enrichment negatively affects and threatens the water source for the Havasupai Tribe, threatens Navajo Nation from the nuclear contamination being hauled through it on a road that is prone to frequent and major accidents, and then has negatively affected the health of many in White Mesa as they get exposed to contamination from the hauling and the effects of the uranium processing just 5 miles from their community center!

This is ongoing colonialism, environmental racism and systemic vi0l3nce that can be seen all across the Southwest United States from Oak Flat to Hakamwe to The Grand Canyon, to White Mesa and all the way up to Thacker Pass in Northern Nevada.

The war on indigenous people of Turtle Island and colonial vi0l3nce against them has NEVER ended. Indigenous people are still here, fighting, resisting and defending what is most sacred on this Earth.

If you are a citizen of the “United States”, you have a duty to the indigenous people of this land and a responsibility to Mother Earth and nature itself, who make life for you possible, to stand up against capitalism, corporations and those who are massacring the life on this planet’s support systems for temporary, personal enrichment and economic gain.

I’m so grateful for all that was shared with us and for the help we received in getting my car back to the valley.

The struggle continues until there is justice for indigenous people and communities, their way of life, the land is protected and safe and until Land Back! ✊🏼🗣️

PLEASE find a way to show up, and to make positive contributions to these fights and struggles in ANY way you possibly can! Every LITTLE bit counts!

This is the anniversary of Hello Mother Lake ! One year ago, Making Waves teamed up with @hoyeva_bornagain and the GSL Hopeline to bring the ecosystem of Great Salt Lake onstage at TEDx. Kestrel danced. Brine shrimp swirled. Blue heron stalked through blue rippling waves. @hoyeva_bornagain prayed and prayed for the Lake and all the species of this place as relatives. The song from that performance still gets stuck in our heads. This performance was a prayer. 🦬❤️ A link to the recording is in our bio. Two weekends ago, STLC joined another beautiful collaborative outreach in Salt Lake City, and together we served over 300 of our neighbors! 💕

Our longtime partners @coconuthutslc
invited us to join Breaking Bread and their monthly Saturday outreach started by Susie and her awesome crew @pik2ar over a decade ago. We can’t wait to join all of them again 💛💛💛.

Every time we serve neighbors facing homelessness, we’re profoundly reminded that true beauty comes from within. You see someone whose light has been dimmed by the judgment, cruelty, and lack they endure living on the streets. Then, just 30 minutes later, after a warm delicious meal, the high-quality essentials they need, and a little dignity and love, their light shines through. And it’s contagious. ✨

After months of prep, a full day of packing and travel, and a challenging morning of setup, the fatigue and impatience melted away once the love started flowing. In their place came laughter, grateful tears, hugs and camaraderie, and finally, a little peace from the chaos of life on the streets.

A special shoutout to everyone who made this possible: our SLC partners, our generous donors and supporters, and all of our hardworking volunteers, both behind the scenes and on the streets. 🙏

Thank you to @kurtwastell and friends for rustling up more new beanies and caps than we’ve ever had to offer! 🧢
