Long Story, with a great ending!! So definitely worth the read! 🥰 We’ve had a dream to redo the outside of our store for a long time. It is the only part of the store I’m not proud of (in fact I cringe at the thought of it and rarely post photos - see previous post for a video). In December, a shoplifter stole clothing from us over multiple days. On December 23rd at the height of of Christmas rush we caught her long enough to get that round of clothing back but not long enough for the police to arrive. On December 26th our gorgeous Dreamer Girl mural was destroyed. 😢 (See second photo.) @naomi.the.caterpillar and @paintandrust were amazing and got rid of most of the graffiti but ever since then it keeps getting tagged. Once a mural has been hit, it becomes fair play it seems.

A couple months ago we put a plan in place to redo the outside of our store that would involve two of our artists @vandcodesignstudio & @artandsoulcreativeco but we’ve been slow to implement it due to the cost. 🥺(It’s a small business reality.) Since the shoplifting incident I’ve been reevaluating carrying clothing at the store. I love working with the brands we have and I love bringing home all my favourite items but we are a gift store and our focus is on our Giving Crates. So I’ve made the decision to stop carrying clothing and sell everything we have at a discount with all proceeds going towards our store beautification dream. ✨ I’d love to return our mural to her former glory where people had fun taking photos and dancing with her (swipe for all the fun) and put our plan in place to make the outside of the store even better! ✨ Starting today, you’ll find every single item of clothing we carry - both in-store and online - ON SALE! See Link in Bio. We only have one of each size so shop early and while you’re getting a discount, know that you are also helping us achieve our dreams. 💫 Thanks so much for that! All clothing sales starting today will be tracked towards our goal and we’ll update you with the progress. 🌟 Photo of the amazing @able Merly Jacket by @yeahokciao - now only $145 CDN.

And just like that, we’ve put the wraps on our #Behindtheplexi project!

A month-long campaign featuring a raw photo essay that offered limited-edition prints of behind-the-scenes glimpses into 33 beloved local restaurants during the pandemic, all of the proceeds from Behind the Plexi will be dedicated to the creation of two new scholarships for restaurant workers who have experienced employment setbacks due to COVID-19 — one via the @bchospitalityfoundation and the other to the @chineserestaurantawards scholarship at Vancouver Community College.

The Chinese Restaurant Awards is also generously contributing $10 for every print sold from the collection of photos taken at Chinese and Taiwanese restaurants.

A HUGE thank you to Brad Roark of @oddfishrestaurant and @nookrestaurant for the initial inspiration, @smccomm for the heavy lifting, all four of the photographers who lent their time, talent and keen eyes to this project — @whentheyfindus, @hudsonny, @mayowill and @wadecomerphoto — and John Goldsmith and the team at @printmaker.studio (printmaker-studio.com) for providing printing at cost.

We sincerely appreciate all of you who checked it out, chipped in and helped us create a lasting legacy for Vancouver restaurant workers.

This experience has lifted us up and given us yet another glimpse into the true sense of community that exists here in the Vancouver restaurant industry and those who love it and how together, we are stronger when we support one another.

Stand tall. Stay strong. Show love. Support local.

Cast your 👀 on more of the amazing behind-the-scenes shots of some of your favourite cafes, restaurants and staff that were taken as part of our #BehindthePlexi fundraiser.

Big shout-out to the four talented photographers who lent their time and talents to capture the images — @whentheyfindus, @hudsonny, @mayowill and @wadecomerphoto — as well as John Goldsmith and the team at @printmaker.studio (printmaker-studio.com) for providing printing at cost for the prints.

Folks looking to purchase their #Behindtheplexi prints have until Sunday, June 6 at midnight to place their order via our website.

All proceeds from each print will be dedicated to the creation of two new scholarships for restaurant workers who have experienced employment setbacks due to COVID-19 — one via the @bchospitalityfoundation and the other to the @chineserestaurantawards scholarship at Vancouver Community College.

The Chinese Restaurant Awards will also contribute $10 for every print sold from the collection of photos taken at Chinese and Taiwanese restaurants.
