Mount Stephen is a huge peak towering above Field, BC. It holds some of the best waterfall ice climbs in the Canadian Rockies, but also some of the most exposed climbs to big avalanche terrain.

The latest ice climbing avalanche atlas for Mt Stephen is now available on the @avalanchecanada app and website. Mt Stephen is a place where you can't get an accurate sense of the scale of the terrain from below; it's just too foreshortened. These atlas photos were taken from a helicopter, and from high on a ridge across the valley. From up here, looking across, you can see the actual scale, and it's big.

We've described five routes, each with results from the survey @huens ran last winter. Thanks to everyone who participated in these surveys for all of your valuable information and stories.

Meet our 2026 Summit of Excellence Award recipient: Sarah Hueniken (@huens) ๐Ÿง—โ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ—ป

Since 1987, the Summit of Excellence Award has recognized individuals who have made significant contributions to mountain life in Canada. This year, weโ€™re celebrating Sarah Hueniken, a certified ACMG Alpine Guide whose more than 25-year career in the Rockies has helped shape both climbing and the broader mountain community.

Sarah was the first North American woman to climb the mixed rock-and-ice grades of M11, M12, M13 and M14. A former North American Ice Climbing Champion, she has completed first ascents around the world, from China to Iceland.

For Sarah, however, climbing has always been about more than personal achievement. For more than a decade, she has created and led women-specific mountaineering programs that encourage women to develop confidence and leadership skills in the backcountry. She also co-founded the Mountain Muskox Mentorship Program after losing a close friend in an avalanche. The Bow Valley non-profit provides professionally facilitated peer support for people navigating trauma and loss in the outdoors. Under Sarahโ€™s leadership, the program has grown from one pilot chapter to six across Western Canada, reaching hundreds of people.

Sarahโ€™s work has also helped make ice climbing safer. In 2020, she became Avalanche Canadaโ€™s first Ice Climbing Ambassador and co-created the Rockies Ice Climbing Avalanche Atlas, an information system that brings together community knowledge to help climbers better understand avalanche exposure on ice climbing routes.

Her contributions have also been recognized with the ACMG Gold Distinguished Service Award, the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal, and a place among Canadaโ€™s Top 100 Most Powerful Women.

๐Ÿ† Sarah will receive the Summit of Excellence Award on Saturday, November 7 during the evening show in the Jenny Belzberg Theatre. Learn more at the link in our bio.

20 BIPOC women.

This summer, I taught 20 BIPOC women how to climb and top rope belay, and it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Iโ€™m honoured to share climbing with other BIPOC women and to be the representation I never had when I first started.

When I began my climbing journey, I never imagined something like this would be possible. To now have introduced more than 50 BIPOC women to climbing through different events is incredibly surreal.

This series would not have been possible without the support of @huens, who believed in my abilities, my passion, and my commitment to this work. She advocated on my behalf and helped secure funding from @arcteryx. I also want to thank all of my family & friends who have shared, reposted, and engaged with my posts along the way.

Iโ€™m incredibly grateful for every single one of you. Building this community and watching it grow has been one of the most meaningful parts of my climbing journey. Seeing women try something new, challenge themselves, and discover that they belong in this space has made every bit of effort worth it.

Hereโ€™s to many more women finding their place in climbing! ๐Ÿฉต

Also a beautiful reminder to invest in community!!! Community is everything and I wouldnโ€™t be here without it!
