POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Allie MacDonald spent his summer portraying Roger in Rent, a haunted young musician in grief over the death of his girlfriend who is perpetually confronted by his own mortality and the mortality of nearly everyone close to him at the height of the HIV epidemic in New York. Becca Guilderson and Hugh Ritchie spent the summer portraying a Northern Irish couple at Ross Creek Centre for the Arts separated in the 1840s during the emotional perils of emigrating to what is now Ontario. Stephanie MacDonald was just at Festival Antigonish playing a grieving ghost tour kiosk worker at the very end of her rope, and Ryan Rogerson was last on stage at Neptune playing the mayor of Gander having to contend with thousands of newcomers arriving traumatized and frightened on September 11th, 2001. From now until October 25th this cast has gathered together at Neptune Theatre’s Fountain Hall to do a hard pivot from the harrowing and the dark to Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors, which is absolute silliness for the joy of silliness’ sake. The Monkey's Paw sets a very different vibe from our mainstage show, The Wind Coming Over the Sea — and this comment we received from a recent audience member sums up the contrast between the two quite nicely:

"The Monkey's Paw goes off like a rocket from its very opening scene [...] The actors are excellent at moving from a contented domesticity towards shock and horror"

As the sky darkens around us each evening, so do the events of the play, making it a perfect showcase of why our By Fire series works so well!

Catch The Monkey's Paw at 9pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays until August 15

Becca Guilderson and Hugh Ritchie play a young married couple Jane and Henry Johnson in Emma Donoghue’s play The Wind Coming Over the Sea, now playing at Ross Creek Centre for the Arts until August 15th. Jane and Henry are separated when Henry decides that he can make a better life for the family by emigrating from Ireland to Ontario during the widespread famine and sending for them once he has a homestead set up. Guilderson and Ritchie are a couple in real life, and they have been fortunate to work together quite a bit recently, including both being in the company of Neptune Theatre’s smash hit Come From Away, which had five weeks of overlap with the rehearsals for the two plays they are doing in repertory with Two Planks and a Passion Theatre this summer. I caught up with the very busy couple via Zoom to chat with them about their experience inhabiting Gander and Antrim at the same time, working together on such an emotional piece, and how their own family stories have informed the way that they’ve brought these characters to life.
