Healthy reefs need healthy waters. And protecting them takes all of us.

Mahalo to Maui Nō Ka ʻOi Magazine for featuring Maui Nui Marine Resource Council and Hui O Ka Wai Ola in “Where Reefs Begin Again,” a story about the people working to protect and restore Maui’s reefs.

We’re grateful to be part of a community bringing science, care, and commitment to the future of our reefs. There is still so much worth protecting.

Our 2025 Annual Impact Report is here!

The antler coral on our first slide was found broken on the seafloor and replanted through our restoration program. One month later, it was thriving, with ʻaloʻiloʻi damselfish returning to call it home.

None of this work happens alone. Every coral reattached, sample collected, reef surveyed, and native plant placed in the ground was made possible by our donors, volunteers, partners, scientists, and community.

Swipe to explore what we accomplished together, then visit the link in our bio to read the full report.

Mahalo for helping protect Maui Nui’s reefs from mauka to makai.

We all love a good beach day -- but could the water make you sick? 🤧

Recently, The Surfrider Foundation published their annual report on beach water quality testing. The report complies over 1,100 water samples gathered from 90 different beaches across Oʻahu, Maui, and Kauaʻi.

⚠️ The results don't always look too good. Some beaches, like the Moloa‘a Stream mouth on Kauaʻi and Punalu‘u Beach Park on Oʻahu failed every single time they were tested. Twenty-four of the ninety failed to meet the state's recreational health standards for fecal indicator bacteria more than 50% of the time. (For results, please check the Civil Beat article). 🚨

This puts us, our families, and our environment at risk. 💧These issues could only get worse with climate change, as increased storm frequency exacerbates pollution runoff into our water, and sea level rise inundates cesspools. Pollution in the ocean disrupts healthy aquatic systems, diminishing their ability to act as a carbon sink. 🪸🌊

We should all care about what's in our oceans -- and that doesn't mean just the good stuff.

Mahalo nui to everyone who gathered with us for our community benefit dinner, Hānau Kana, He ʻĀkoʻakoʻa, Puka!

We came together towards a shared vision for the health of Maui Nui’s reefs and nearshore waters. It was a heartfelt evening remembering and reaffirming the power of a community united towards a vision of beautiful, clear ocean waters and an ocean ecosystem teeming with vitality.

Together, we honored the work of Maui Nui Marine Resource Council (@mauireefs) and Hui O Ka Wai Ola (@huiokawaiola), whose ongoing efforts help monitor, restore, and protect Maui Nui’s coastal ecosystems.

Hānau kana, he ʻākoʻakoʻa, puka, “Born was the coral, it rises,” honors coral as a foundation of our islands and reminds us of the deep pilina between Hawaiʻi’s people, the ocean, and the environment. We carry that continuity of aloha forward when we gather, care for one another, and mālama the ecosystems that sustain us.

Last weekend we gathered at Makena Golf & Beach Club for an evening that reminded us why this work matters: good food, good company, and a room full of people who care about protecting Maui’s waters.

Huge thanks to Makena for hosting, funding, and welcoming us with true aloha. That kind of generosity from a local business doesn’t happen everywhere, and we don’t take it for granted. Because of them, 100% of ticket proceeds go straight to the work of Maui Nui Marine Resource Council and Hui O Ka Wai Ola.

To everyone who bought a ticket and joined us for the evening, we couldn’t do this without you. Your attendance directly funded our on the ground work: water quality monitoring, reef research, and community education happening right now across Maui Nui.

And to our table sponsors, mahalo for your generous support in making this night possible.

This is what community-funded conservation looks like. Mahalo nui loa.

At our recent Lau Ke Aloha: Limu Love, Hale Pili continued to serve as a gathering place where pilina is nurtured and strengthened.

Through hands-on limu press art, participants were invited to slow down, observe closely, and deepen their relationship with limu as a living resource, a source of meaʻai, a foundation of nearshore ecosystem health, and an expression of hana noʻeau. Together, we strengthened our connection to the moku of Honuaʻula, to one another, and to the kai that continues to sustain Maui Nui.

Hale Pili is a space for pilina, creating alongside community, sharing ʻike across generations, and recognizing our kuleana to mālama the waters and resources that care for us.

Mahalo nui to all who joined us, and to our ʻŌiwi Resources & Stewardship Team and Anna Palomino for guiding this meaningful experience and helping grow pilina to Honuaʻula through limu, creativity, and stewardship.
