🎧 THERAPY... BUT MAKE IT METAL 🎸

What do you call a guy who wears a Pantera beanie to work, talks about feelings, and jumps on stage mid-gig?

A metal head counsellor.
A true-blue bogan from New Zealand.
And believe it or not… a legit New Zealand therapist helping people find their way through the chaos.

Meet Richard — heavy metal fan, mental health worker, and proud battle vest wearer who's flipping the script on what healing looks like.

No incense. No whale sounds. Just brutal honesty, big riffs, and the kind of real talk that actually helps.

This episode proves one thing:
🧠 You don’t have to wear a tie to help people.
🤘 You can be a bogan and still save lives.
😂 And yes, pirate metal can be a therapy tool. (He’ll explain. It’s genius.)

👇 Watch it now if:

You’ve ever felt like an outsider

You think therapy should be a little less... clinical

You believe bogans have the best stories (you’re right)

I didn't get out of art school what I thought I would. I felt weird in art school and weird everywhere else. I learnt how to paint through trial and error and the occasional youtube videos I certainly didn't learn how to paint at art school. I started painting in oils in high school but never painted in oils during my BFA - painting was not very cool at the time.

The prompt for #aprilforartists2023 is how I learnt. I didn't learn how to be an artist at art school. It's taken me 15 years to finally get a grip on what I want to explore in my art practice and how I want to make that work. One of my superpowers is persistence.

However, I did learn to think, to explore to make some weird stuff. I learnt to talk about art even when I didn't understand it. I gained and lost all my confidence at the same time.

I meet some of the most amazing people during my degree I hope they don't mind me dragging out these blurry photos and tagging them. I left Massey University with a BFA(hons) majoring in painting. These images are proof that I did indeed paint a little during my degree.

These images are from my grad exhibition called test pot(we used test pots to paint the work😍) a joint show by myself and @hulk_simmonds I sold my first painting during this show. I was very proud of that. We pulled in some buskers from across the road to play outside, it was a really lovely opening night. My pieces are the abstract works and the figurative ones are by Richard. It was held at the gallery DAF106, which unfortunately closed down a few years after.

This exhibition was in 2007, I had no idea how hard the road ahead would be but I kept painting. I've painted some bad work but I'd rather paint bad pieces than none at all.

I never painted using test pots again and I gave away all my unsold paintings within the year following.

This includes one of the only photos I have with my father who passed away in 2015.

If you've read this far you get a gold star. Tell me something you did in 2007 since we're reminiscing.
