Last week, we came together with Hunter College’s Humanities Action Lab for Mixed-Media Data and Storytelling for Extreme Heat in New York City — an afternoon of research, real stories, and a walking tour through East Harlem to see the impact of extreme heat up close. One of the projects we shared: Inside Heat, our participatory action research project following 31 residents across Harlem’s most heat-vulnerable neighborhoods this summer. While we’re still analyzing the indoor temperature data from monitors placed in every participant’s home, the surveys and interviews are already telling a hard story — the drastic measures our neighbors are taking just to keep their energy bills down in the heat. Explore the full story map, including Inside Heat and more of our extreme heat research, link in bio. #ExtremeHeat #EnvironmentalJustice #Harlem #ClimateWeekNYC #WEACT

Listening to the Territory to Transform It How do we truly understand the territory we inhabit? More than an initiative, El Camino del Agua is a process of collective learning. It starts with a simple, yet uncomfortable idea: we cannot solve the water crisis without first understanding the relationships — social, cultural, and ecological — that exist around water. Led by Dr. María Moreno at Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Cuajimalpa, and with the support of Humanities Action Lab, the project brings together community and academia to develop a deeper understanding of the territory. Not through technical imposition, but through listening. Listening to those who inhabit it. Walking through the places where water appears, transforms, or disappears. Understanding the stories that do not appear on official maps. Because water is not simply managed. It is lived. Through exercises such as collective mapping, territorial walks, and intergenerational dialogue, El Camino del Agua seeks something more ambitious than simply diagnosing the problem: it seeks to reshape the way we relate to our environment. And that means recognizing something essential: solutions cannot be universal. Every territory has its own logic, tensions, and possibilities. What works in one place may fail in another. That is why the project is committed to place-based solutions — those that emerge from the context, from the community, and from a deep understanding of the landscape. This process also reveals something uncomfortable but necessary: the growth of the surrounding environment — urban, economic, and demographic — is not neutral. It has direct impacts on water and on people’s lives. Understanding this is the first step toward intervening responsibly. El Camino del Agua does not offer quick answers. It offers something more valuable: a path toward asking better questions. And at a time when the water crisis demands urgent action, learning to listen may, paradoxically, be the most radical act of all. This journey continues. And every person who joins it becomes part of the solution.

On February 2 – 3, the @HumanitiesActionLab at Hunter College hosted a two-day convening, “States of Incarceration: Connecting Stories Across Borders and Bars.” The event brought together faculty members, students, advocates, and justice-impacted individuals from states and localities — including Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, North Carolina, Wisconsin, and Washington, D.C. — to share first-hand accounts of the explosion of incarceration in their communities and envision how to create public narratives to contest immigration detention and civil incarceration together. #TBT

The historic environmental movement as a multiracial endeavor, that's the story Stevie Ruiz tells in his brand new book. He talks about his book, followed by a conversation with Cathy Gudis. Find out: What is TEK to MEK? Who cooked the multicourse feasts for John Muir in the woods? When did environmental justice really start (hint: it was before the 20thc)?🔥Thurs, May 14, 3:00 PM @ UCR, CHASS Inter-disciplinary Building South in Rm 1113. 🔥 Sorry--it's only in person! But we wanted to spread the word, 🎤 🎤because he gets right at IE people's histories of extraction from the land and labor as it relates to the environmental histories right here--not somewhere green out there and not just since superfund started. #environmentalhistory #iehistory
