Comment “Humanscale” and I’ll send over my Substack article where I dive deeper on posture and the importance of prioritizing a few things to support it, as we age.

Your neck hurts at 4pm and you didn’t do anything. That’s the point.

I spent years telling patients — and myself — to sit up straighter. The research is honestly messier than that. Posture correlates with pain far less than most of us assume. What holds up better: static loading. Holding any single position for hours loads the same structures continuously, and tissue doesn’t love that, no matter how “correct” the position looks.

This lands harder on women. We report neck and shoulder symptoms at higher rates in computer-based work, and a lot of office furniture was dimensioned around male anthropometrics. If your feet don’t reach the floor or the seat pan is too deep for your thigh length, you spend the whole day bracing. That’s a fit problem, not a willpower problem.

So I stopped shopping for padding and started shopping for movement. The Humanscale Freedom Task Chair uses a weight-sensitive recline — no tension knob to fight with — so it moves when I move instead of locking me into one “correct” angle. The headrest supports my neck on recline instead of my neck supporting my head.

I’m also thinking long-term. Bone density declines faster after menopause and the thoracic spine is where that tends to show. I can’t control all of that. I can control what I sit in for eight hours a day.

Still get up every 30 minutes. No chair replaces that.

Rethinking the way we sit, with one fundamental reference point: the human body.

With pioneering ergonomics, dynamic support, and a design by Niels Diffrient, the Freedom office chair naturally adapts to every movement of the body. Combining iconic design, exceptional comfort, and intuitive functionality, it creates a workplace experience where wellbeing, performance, and aesthetics come together.

A good office chair should adapt to you. Not the other way around.

For the new Azura Partners workplace in Abu Dhabi, Mart®️ worked alongside KPS to bring ergonomic comfort into the design with Freedom task chairs by Humanscale.

Designed to provide support with minimal manual adjustment, the chairs were selected in Ticino Canyon leather with polished aluminium frames and graphite trim, complementing the workplace’s refined interiors.

Sit down. Lean back. Freedom moves with you. 😌

The @humanscale Freedom Headrest uses your body weight to adapt as you change positions. And when you recline, the dynamic headrest follows your movement, supporting your head and neck - no manual adjustments needed.

Designed by Niels Diffrient, with one simple idea: your chair should adjust to you. ✨
