thanks to our hard working crew all 3 days went by like a breeze, and thanks for cracking jokes every 2 seconds bc i wouldn't have kept my sanity & mood up otherwise :>

additionally, thank you to all our interviewees we were able to meet and talk with. you all gave great answers despite being spontaneously asked to be interviewed off the streets of Toronto

To Burn our Sacred House by Abby Ridd was awarded the MDFF Selects Student Showcase 2026 Best Film. The jury of Clement Virgo, Luis De Filippis and Emma Cheuk provided this statement:

“As filmmakers, we understand the time, energy, effort, and heart that goes into making a film. The days and nights are long and somehow there is never enough time. But you got it done, and you should all be proud of yourselves and of your work shown here tonight at the Lightbox. Thank you for sharing your work. It was an honour to watch these films and to get a glimpse of the future of Canadian cinema.

To Burn our Sacred House is a film that wonderfully captures the charm and spirit of young people trying to communicate their beliefs, observations, and hopes. Cinema is at its best when we see ourselves reflected in the lives of characters who are unlike us, and though the jury all come from different experiences, Lola & Louise’s questions, fears, and dreams felt familiar. Thanks to the detailed and acute script, stunning design, and harmonious score we collectively walked away saying, “I know what you mean, I feel it too.”

The jury is proud to award the prize of the MDFF Selects Student Showcase 2026 Best Film to To Burn our Sacred House by Abby Ridd.”
