“I make anthropomorphic, multi-media drawings, paintings and sculptures in response to my everyday waking fantasies and desires to escape.

I present imagery that conflates a language of daydreaming with the frustration of everyday life. I make pictures as a way to take my own imagination seriously and as an invitation for the viewer to do the same. These works are proposals for things that I wish were real, and that I want you to consider. They skew scenes and objects of the everyday into syntheses of pain, awkwardness, shame and sex. By presenting scenarios that at first seem painful- often involving tearing skin and metal parts embedded sensually into the body, these works pose deviancy as a path to freedom.

Although my work uses a framework of narrative, it defies straightforward explanation. This obscuring of narrative is intentional as I never ask a viewer to understand a specific idea, but to pay attention, and project one’s own imagination upon the worlds I am setting up.”

I’m incredibly grateful to the Art Students League of New York (@aslnyc) for awarding me the Merit Scholarship in Abstraction for the upcoming school year.

Pictured are my metal sculptures created in Natsuki Takauji’s @natsukiuji metal fabrication class, in collaboration with @urbanglass_nyc and @huntermfastudio

What can I say about the last 3 years? So much art was made, deconstructed, loved, hated, and, of course, gossiped about. Papers were researched, written, and rewritten. And that’s not the half of it. Hunter MFA, you were messy, brilliant, exhausting, and unforgettable. Grateful for the experience, and equally grateful that it’s over. ✌️
