Square Gallery is pleased to announce Hwi Hahm's solo exhibition ≪Smudgy and Lossy≫, from October 19 to Nov 10, 2024. Through swaths of color on canvas, Hwi Hahm explores the possibilities that exist in the vague dimension beyond visibility. Unconcerned with identity or personal narrative, the artist focuses on the material properties(non-fictional quality) of painting as it is constructed within the canvas. He reduces stories and objects to swaths of these properties and utilizes them as building components for the fantastical possibilities (fictional quality) that painting can evoke. To create these possibilities, the artist reliably removes unnecessary narrative, leaving only the uncertain but necessary on the canvas, and the vague swaths of color provide small clues for the viewer to access and sense the illusionistic possibilities.

Hwi Hahm has been working and living in New York and Chicago for a decade now. As a Korean American painter, Hwi has found a unique position in a superfluity of identity art - rather than directly portraying his culture and personality, his ambiguity in subject represents the repercussions of depersonalization of identity. Hwi says, “As a maker, I am fully aware that is impossible to completely omit/alienate my identity from the paintings; however, it is a refuge and a survival method that I have developed in response to living as an American citizen born in South Korea, expected to have a perfect balance between being South Korean and being American but constantly being rejected by both societies. This experience dampened my will to navigate my identity with any certainty. Rather than screaming to find a way home, I chose to quietly recede into my inner logic, to find the balance between the two tensions existing in painting: the material properties and the illusionistic possibilities.” Translating the painter’s movements and his present state in the studio to film, Korean director, Kijin Jang, follows Hwi for this documentary, List of No’s. Capturing Hwi in action and his vision along with the poetry by his colleague, Jennifer Blaine, the short film takes form as an intimate, almost voyeuristic, study of the painter’s day and an assemblage of the inner logic that is impossible to put into words. In ‘Impermanence’, Hwi Hahm brings together many of the concerns that recur throughout his practice: the tension between abstraction and recognition, the suggestion of a human presence without figuration, and the creation of barriers that withhold as much as they reveal. The luminous yellow orb seems at once a moon, a sun, or a symbolic structure, while the striped field and geometric blocks hover between architecture, landscape, and memory. As in much of Hahm’s work, the forms resist definitive meaning—they deteriorate, fragment, and shift into new states of being. What remains is a space of ambiguity, where absence becomes presence, and the question lingers: what it is, and what it is not. - Hwi Hahm ‘Impermanence’, 2025 oil on canvas 152,5 x 183,5 cm @hwihahm

JO-HS is proud to present the work of Hwi Hahm as part of Nigredo → Albedo → Rubedo, our current exhibition in Mexico City. The show will remain on view through February 25 at calle Lucerna 70b, Col. Juárez. 🌀 Through abstract paintings with an emphasis on the absence of the human form, Hwi Hahm (b.1993 Busan, South Korea) creates an esoteric, veiled expression, prompting the question: when do swaths of paint become something? He discusses the dissociation of identity, and how it offers a balance between material properties and the illusionistic possibilities of painting. Hahm earned his MFA at Hunter College in 2024 and BFA at School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2016. He had a recent two person show at F2T Gallery in Milan and has participated in multiple group exhibitions including C L E A R I N G, New York, Chapter NY, New York; JO-HS Gallery, New York, Unosunove, Rome, IT. He has participated in residencies such as Palazzo Monti at Brescia, Italy, and Pilotenkueche Residency at Leipzig, Germany in 2017. He is currently living and working in Brooklyn, NY. . .
