Building the engine.

Easy machine work is an underrated tool for building aerobic capacity.

Keeping the intensity low allows you to accumulate quality training volume without adding as much impact and fatigue as harder running sessions.

It’s not about making every session hard. It’s about building a base that allows you to go harder when it matters.

The goal is to build an engine that lasts.

I’ve always loved random running missions and Saturday was one for the books. 12 laps of just over 5kms per lap on the hour every hour. Besides a 50k trail at the beginning of Jan - my longest run this year has been a 22k trail. It’s pretty cool to see how you can push yourself to do hard things. Next up is @drylandtraverse and the @doepicsh.t Vertical Mile. What are bucket list races for you in SA?

332 DAYS. 100KM. ONE INSANE IDEA.

Today, I’m officially entering the Cape 100km.

100 kilometres from Hermanus to Stellenbosch.

And between now and that start line, I’m taking you along for the whole damn journey.

The early mornings.
The long runs.
The strength sessions.
The setbacks.
The dad duties.
The husband life.
The days where training feels easy… and the days where it absolutely doesn’t.

Because I’m not a professional athlete. I’m a husband, a twin dad, a golfer, a runner — and a normal guy who’s decided to take on something that is anything but normal.

332 days to build a body and a mind capable of running 100km.

This is where it starts.

September 2027.
Hermanus → Stellenbosch.
100KM.

Let’s see what happens. 🏃‍♂️

You’re only as good as you recover.

With training volume going up, recovery has become just as important as the training itself.

A few things I try to stay consistent with:

• Sleep
• Hydration + nutrition
• Keeping easy days easy
• Mobility
• Paying attention to how I’m actually recovering

I’ve been using @gowod_mobilityfirst to make mobility more intentional. I can check where my mobility is at and follow routines instead of just randomly stretching.

I also use @whoop to keep an eye on my recovery and make sure I’m not just constantly pushing through fatigue.

The goal isn’t to train hard every day.
The goal is to be ready to train hard when it matters.
