To celebrate the first year in the life of the studio, we’ve compiled a song from (almost) every artist who has come through the doors thus far. Thank you to all the bands who trusted us with their art while we got our wheels off the ground. Please get in touch if you would like to book a session. Here’s to many more!

We’re back! Can’t wait to see y’all at State Street Pub on Saturday, April 4 for the latest installment of my birthday show with yet another stacked lineup, featuring Indy hip-hop icons Oreo Jones and Sirius Black, local darkwave standouts Angel-Maker, and esteemed rock ‘n’ roll rippers Hyper Tensions.

It might not be as hype as Hali’s game-winner over Giannis, but we’re at least gonna try!

Live Music Society had a chance to catch up with Mark Tester, owner of @statestreetpubssp about the 'SSP Tapes'! Located in Indianapolis, this Music In Action grantee created a unique and fascinating archival music project, capturing the acts that play the storied venue. Check out what Mark had to say below! 🎶

Q: Tell us about the cassette project!

A: SSP LIVES is a series of cassette compilations that we are releasing through the bar. The tapes showcase the wide breadth of sounds that pass across the modest stage in our 80 capacity bar, both from local and touring artists. Via these sonic tapestries of high-quality board bootlegged recordings, we hope to weave a common thread through all of the music programming that makes SSP such an important space by providing a physical and digital document of this current era of Hoosier underground art.

Q: How is the cassette project impacting the State Street Pub/ Indianapolis' live music community?

A: Our first volume, which was released in November, contained 20 tracks from over the last couple of years, with our second volume (arriving December 19) comprising of 18 recordings. The SSP LIVES tapes bring together the varied and somewhat disparate musical scenes of Indianapolis underneath one common umbrella. The tapes have showcased up-and-coming talent and intriguing one-off projects alongside more established local and regional acts who have graced our stage over the years in an effort to create a cohesive collection of modern Indianapolis (and just passin' through) sounds.
