Archives of a Crescent builds on 20+ interviews carried out with former and current residents of Hilldrop Crescent (London, N7).
Known for the infamous 1910 Dr.Crippen’s murder, the Crescent has much more to tell.

Residents remember playing amongst the bomb ruins in the aftermath of the Second World War: “The Germans invented adventure playgrounds for us”. Was it necessary, they ask, to knock down the whole Crescent? And why, if the estate was meant for older people, is there no lift?

The residents show how the Council’s failures brought them together, with people doing the shopping for their older neighbours. Even the presence of rats on/underneath the Crescent becomes a metaphor for resilience, and it adds a surreal spin: “Rats are meant to be very intelligent creatures; you can imagine they have a rat training school.”

Through the real voices of the people, accompanied by uncanny puppetry, and stop-motion animation, Archives of a Crescent acts like a magnifying lens that shows us how a cell encapsulates the universe.

Archives of a Crescent is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
