Week Without Driving!

You might not have heard of it, but it’s a challenge put to everyone to experience what it’s like to be someone who isn’t able to drive. The Week Without Driving is a challenge to go about life, without driving! It sounds simple in theory and for many, it is! However, there are some challenges for many as well.

The Week Without Driving is to raise awareness to the actual lived experience of non-drivers as well as to promote how great car-lite alternatives can be for some uses! Many in our communities, whether they be keiki, kupuna, or disabled individuals, do not have the luxury of being able to drive wherever they want to, and we should advocate for public services that considers their needs! By putting yourselves in their shoes you take the step of understanding what it’s like to be someone who can’t drive and can better relate to the experiences (positive and negative) of the many commuters in Hawaii that can’t drive.

If you want to contact your local representative about prioritizing the needs of non-drivers or to simply express other concerns, reach out to us via DM’s or at oahutransitriders@gmail.com! We are more than happy to direct you to the appropriate resources available and if possible, help you push forward transit or walkability concerns in your community!

The Hawaiʻi Youth Transportation Council (HYTC) welcomed its 2nd cohort on June 28th.

As part of the youth-led Navahine v. HDOT settlement, the HYTC works directly alongside HDOT to shape the implementation of Hawaiʻi's commitment to decarbonize its transportation system by 2045 — not just watch it happen.

Council members wasted no time. Their first meeting opened with a direct conversation with Hawaiian Airlines' CEO Diana Birkett Rakow on sustainable aviation and decarbonization plans, as well as a briefing and discussion with HDOT on where implementation stands.

The meeting closed with a proper send-off: outgoing members Charlotte, Luca, Derek, Mia, and Luke were honored with certificates for their service before new and returning members introduced themselves and connected over the rest of the afternoon.

This is what settlement implementation looks like. 🌺✈️

Nearly two years after Hawaiʻi youth secured a landmark settlement in Navahine v. HDOT, the implementation work continues.

Transportation is Hawaiʻi's largest source of greenhouse gas emissions. Expanding EV infrastructure helps make cleaner transportation more accessible and affordable while reducing climate pollution that threatens young people's constitutional rights.

New electric trams at HNL are one step toward Hawai‘i’s commitment to fully decarbonize transportation by 2045 under the youth-led Navahine settlement. This is one of many electrification efforts at the HNL airport and by HDOT. Youth voices didn’t just call for change; they’re shaping it. 🌺

Keiki deserve the freedom to get to school, sports, jobs, and opportunities without cost being a barrier.

The Keiki Ride Free bills would provide youth free access to public transit statewide, supporting working families, reducing traffic, and helping build a healthier future for Hawai‘i.

This Transit Equity Day, we honor Rosa Parks and her courageous stand for dignity, access, and justice!

Her legacy lives on in Hawai‘i, where youth are leading the push for Keiki Ride Free, a bill to make public transit free for all youth statewide, support families and cut pollution.

Hawaiʻi has a real opportunity to turn youth-led climate commitments into action. ⚡️

A proposed Clean Vehicle Rebate Program would make electric vehicles more affordable, cut climate pollution, and help put the state on track to meet its legally binding zero-emissions transportation goals. But progress depends on public participation.

Make your voice heard during the 2026 Legislative Session!

Prepare your testimony, stay ready for short timelines, and show lawmakers that Hawaiʻi communities support clean, equitable transportation solutions.

Keiki Ride Free (HB1879)

With the support of @hytcleaders Keiki Ride Free has been introduced to the state house as HB1879 and the state senate as SB2699! Keiki Ride Free will grant all youth up to high school graduation free public transit! A parent or guardian will also be able to accompany them for free up until age 12.

In a place where parents may have to work multiple jobs to make ends meet, having the time to drive kids home, to school, and to extracurriculars is a necessity that isn’t always available. Giving free public transit to kids lifts that burden off of parent’s shoulders, while also giving kids some independence.

While there are currently reduced or free bus fare programs like the EXPRESS program or the youth HOLO card, parents— Immigrant parents—may not even know these exist, and may not be able to navigate the bureaucratic system with English as their second language. Having a universal, easy to understand policy that needs only the ID that kids are already given is a leap towards accessibility.

More importantly however, Keiki Ride Free will incentivize kids to ride public transit and accustom themselves to it. People are afraid of what they are unfamiliar with, and having kids understand transit from a young age will make them well equipped to riding it as working adults, and even teaching their parents and friends how to ride.

Public transit is a near universal good for kids. Public transit offers a rare third space where kids can be around others in a controlled environment that is outside of home, school, or organized activities. The social interaction that kids have on buses is irreplaceable, and ever dwindling in the age of the internet.
