2020 was the year the world stopped. For Willo, it arrived in the middle of a creative run that felt like it was just beginning to take shape. Still carrying the pressure of following his 2017 debut Never Die, he had spent years searching for what came next. By the time Slide arrived, the answer sounded completely different from what came before it.

“TADEY” — pronounced TAH-DEY — served as the lead single from the five-track EP. Produced by Donny Domino, the record was bright, energetic and colorful, a sharp contrast to the nostalgia, seriousness and underlying darkness that defined much of Never Die. It also marked the first-ever visual collaboration between Willo and Dance Dailey, beginning a creative relationship that would continue well beyond the record.

Donny Domino and Willo would become special collaborators in their own right — two dreamers with an ability to turn music into pictures and ideas bigger than the record itself. Along with a completely new cast of creators, Slide proved once again that Willo rarely needed much more than a canvas and a few colors to create his own world.

The “TADEY” visual reflected that same spirit. Friends became part of the universe, including rapper and frequent collaborator Rikki Blu, writer Rodney Blu and others, giving the video the communal energy that has followed Willo throughout much of his work.

Then the world shut down.

Whether 2020 interrupted something that was never meant to continue or sank the ship before it truly got to sail depends on who you ask. But “TADEY” remains one of the clearest snapshots of where Willo was headed before everything changed.

Fresh off his performance at Tulsa’s Black Wallstreet Music Festival in 2021, Willo kept the energy going with an impromptu freestyle from inside the car. Accompanied by Pitch The Puzzle, also known as Brown of Sore Losers, and Foah, founder of Odd 7 Fellow and Lion Amongst Gorillaz, the moment was never planned as a performance — it just happened.

As Willo began rapping, people nearby gradually gathered around the car to listen, turning a casual post-show moment into its own small scene. No stage, no setup, just Willo still locked in after the festival, rapping for whoever happened to be standing close enough to hear it.
