It’s been a LONG two weeks of install, but “Spirit & Dust” opens this week at Urban Arts Space in downtown Columbus! The show runs from October 13–November 14, with an opening reception on Friday, October 16 from 5–7 PM, featuring a durational performance by Michael J. Morris. The exhibition and all events are free and open to the public.

Many, many thanks to the entire UAS staff and all our phenomenal interns, as well as the 18 artists participating in this exhibition. We can’t wait to see you at the gallery!

“stone, bone, bruise, and breath” is a durational performance created and performed by Michael J. Morris. A body and a large piece of limestone move together through the gallery in subtle and quietly shifting configurations. Inspired in part by the widespread tradition of marking the graves of the dead with stones, it is a dance between what is fleeting and what is enduring, the limited time of living and dying along with the deep geological time of the more-than-human world. The preparation and performance of the piece is also an extended meditation on the ways that what we carry—including our grief—changes us, increasing some capacities while also diminishing others.

“Spirit & Dust” is curated by Diane Callahan and Michelle Burdine

Participating Artists: Kristina Arnold, Mary Jo Bole, Michelle Burdine, Diane Callahan, Elvira Clayton, Barbara Fant, Ton’nea Green, Kari Gunter-Seymour, Dana Lynn Harper, Ian Hersko, Gee Horton, Laura Larson, Tracy Longley-Cook, Michael J. Morris, Christian O’Keeffe, Paul O’Keeffe, Chantal Wnuk, Melissa Vogley Woods

August - October

May we swoon despite the fall of infrastructures designed to numb us, end us, and remake us as voiceless apathetic cog workers

Sometimes healing looks like gathering around the same table. ❤️ @thecultureofyou @healingbrokencircles

We were honored to welcome Healing Broken Circles to Flavor 91 Bistro for #thebigtable an evening centered around community; creativity; and conversation. @colsfoundation

Through live performances, honest conversations, personal testimony, and a shared meal; we learned more about the work being done to support people impacted by the criminal justice system through healing and the arts.

Thank you to Karen Hewitt, Healing Broken Circles, The Columbus Foundation’s The Big Table, and everyone who brought their story, listened to someone else’s, or simply shared space with us.

This is what we love about opening our doors; you never know what conversations will happen around the table.

Good food feeds people; community feeds something deeper. 🫶🏽
