This Halloween, we’re celebrating GSMAs newest roster composer Dan Wool—a distinctive voice in film music whose work moves between cult cinema, experimental worlds, and immersive sound.

His score for Phil Tippett’s extraordinary stop-motion feature MAD GOD earned a 2023 Annie Award nomination for music in an animated feature. Created through a collaboration spanning more than a decade, it’s a fitting introduction to a composer comfortable finding beauty in unsettling places.

As principal composer in the soundtrack group Pray for Rain, Dan built a longstanding creative relationship with filmmaker Alex Cox. His credits include DEATH AND THE COMPASS, THREE BUSINESSMEN, SEARCHERS 2.0, and TOMBSTONE RASHOMON—part of a career encompassing dozens of feature films, television, advertising, and live performance.

His accomplishments reach well beyond the screen. Dan has received two Isadora Duncan Dance Award nominations for his work with AXIS Dance Company and Liss Fain Dance. His music and sound design for Phil Tippett and Lucy Raven’s experimental film OUT THERE screened at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. As a producer and engineer, his collaborators have included Debbie Harry, Bernie Worrell, and members of The Pogues.

For music supervisors, filmmakers, and editors, that breadth brings an instinct for storytelling, texture, and the unexpected—fertile ground for scenes that call for creeping tension, strange beauty, or something lurking just beyond the frame.

At George Semper Music Archives, we’re happy to help explore Dan’s catalog, respond to creative briefs, and assist with sync licensing inquiries.

Here’s to good scares and music that stays with you after the credits. 🕸️

👹🔥MAD GOD Gallery at @coprogallery featuring original pieces from @madphilg’s 30-year-in-the-making stop motion animated masterpiece of an unrelenting hellscape; MAD GOD. Loved the gallery, it was indeed the disturbing nightmare fuel that I hoped it would be, and all the pieces were even more horrifying in person. Loved meeting special effects legend and groundbreaking artist, Phil Tippett and composer Dan Wool. 🔥👹 #madgod #philtippett #robocop #ed209 #stopmotion

What a fun weekend of celebrating my friend Dan Wool and his collaborators, film legends Alex Cox (director of Sid and Nancy, Repo Man) and Phil Tippett (stop-motion vfx director on the original Star Wars trilogy)!

First a screening of the 1987 absurdist shoot-em-up STRAIGHT TO HELL (part of @am_cinematheque’s Alex Cox retrospective), then the @coprogallery show Artifacts of a Mad God, featuring storyboards, models, puppets, and costumes from @madphilg’s nightmarish masterpiece MAD GOD! There we ran into another buddy, @mynameischance of the fantastic band @thebabygoatsmusic! Surrounded by cool on all sides!

Hey New York! 2 things:

1. Dead Souls (Alex cox’ new western feature film is playing in town this week- it’s your chance to see my animated credits and a little bit of acting in the big screen- plus a great all around movie with Alex himself in the lead role!

2. I’m coming to town the last week of September to start raising money, awareness, and collaborators for a new feature film as part of @thegotham week! I reserved a hotel- but I’m also poor- so if anyone has a place big enough for a guest - even for 1-2 of the 4 nights, lemme know! (But seriously no pressure- I know New Yorkers live in shoeboxes :)
Also would love to see some of yall even if you can’t put me up. So reach out…I don’t even know who is still in the city :)

Had an awesome time at the LA premiere screening of DEAD SOULS, the newest (and last?) film by Repo Man and Sid & Nancy director Alex Cox! The movie rocks, and it features original music and excellent sound design/editing by my friend @iamdanwool, who did the music for my own feature film Journeyman back in 2005. He’s a genius, and you should absolutely run to the next screening of Dead Souls, which I believe is July 28 in Santa Monica!
