I was taught something by a fantastic tutor in Critical Psychopathology that has stayed with me: sometimes cinema teaches us more about the human psyche than any textbook ever could.

And sometimes, actors deserve far more credit for the psychological complexity they manage to communicate without saying a single word.

Glenn Close in Dangerous Liaisons (1988) is an extraordinary example. And I still think she deserved the Oscar for this performance.

What we’re watching in these final scenes can be understood through the lens of narcissistic collapse.

First comes the realisation that she’s been seen. Not admired. Not feared. Seen. The carefully constructed identity, maintained through manipulation, status and control, is no longer convincing anyone.

Then comes the public rejection. The booing. The humiliation. The unbearable experience of losing control over how other people perceive her.

Watch how she stumbles as she leaves. The woman who once commanded every room can barely hold herself together.

And finally, the removal of her makeup.

It’s one of the most powerful visual metaphors for the collapse of a constructed identity I’ve ever seen on screen.

Because when your entire sense of self depends on controlling what others believe about you, exposure doesn’t simply threaten your reputation. It threatens the identity you’ve built your life around.

And here’s the psychological distinction that matters:

Her suffering doesn’t necessarily mean remorse.

She may be devastated by what she’s lost, without being devastated by what she’s done.

That’s the painful paradox of narcissistic fragility. The collapse can be entirely genuine, even when accountability is absent.

Of course, this is a psychological interpretation of a fictional character, not a clinical diagnosis. But that’s what makes cinema such a brilliant tool for exploring psychopathology.

Glenn Close communicates all of this through her face, her posture, her movement and, finally, a cloth wiping away her makeup.

No monologue. No explanation. Just the devastating moment when the performance can no longer continue.

Oscar-worthy acting. #narcissist #mentalhealth #psychology #
