With a delicious Greek repast curated by GK-Eats @gkeatsnyc UNCLE OVID’S STORYTIME (& STAND-UP METAMORPHOSES) will return this Fall at the Autumn Equinox Sept 22, in New York City at 20:04 in Clara Aich Studio at 218 E 25th. 26 years after actor Todd Conner began his solo exploration of Ovid’s Greco-Roman myths at the 2000 Millenium, this latest reprise is a tribute to the Greater Eleusinian mysteries of ancient Greece, considered the most significant initiatory rite born out of the ancient world. “…in very truth we have learned from them [the rites] the beginnings of life, and have gained the power not only to live happily, but also to die with a better hope.” -Cicero (sourced from eleusinianmysteries.org) No one can say for sure what went on inside the initiation hall at Eleusis. To reveal a vision of what one saw there was considered a capital crime. And so, Plato kept the secret. Aristotle kept it, too. Aeschylus and Sophocles also kept mum. Aristophanes? Yep. Later, Cicero was there; Marcus Aurelius as well. One could easily suspect that our dear Uncle Ovid, too, had been in attendance. The visions at Eleusis existed long before they migrated to the public theatra of the polis, metamorphosing into the “business of show.” The mystery rites of Eleusis remained in practice only a short time into the A.D. era after nearly 2000 years of uninterrupted yearly observance when it was abruptly abolished and demolished by powerful and competing political regimes—canceled under no uncertain terms.
