🌶️ CALL HER SPICY EP5 | PROF. ROMY PARKER

A little over a decade ago, during one of the most debilitating periods of my journey with chronic pain, I was navigating the South African state healthcare system when I accidentally stumbled across Prof. Romy Parker’s pain clinic at Groote Schuur Hospital, right here in Cape Town.

I had absolutely no idea at the time just how profoundly that experience would change my understanding of chronic pain and how I related to it.

Fast forward to today and I’m sitting opposite this brilliant human, one of South Africa’s leading voices in chronic pain management, on my very own show!

In EP5 we unpack the complex relationship between chronic pain, the brain, nervous system and mental health.

After 15 years of navigating chronic illness, this conversation is incredibly close to my heart.

Because chronic pain is REAL. Even when you can’t see it.
And understanding what’s happening in our bodies can be an absolute game changer.

Here’s a little snippet of our conversation. Full episode on YouTube! Link in BIO🌶️❤️

If you can find just ONE human you can fully unmask with, you’ve struck gold! 🌶️

Also… I take my hula hooping exceptionally seriously. 😂

Masking isn’t exclusive to neurodivergence. Invisible illness knows this game too. 🌶️

“I’m fine.”
While your body is crashing.

Smiling while overloaded.

Performing “normal” while running on fumes.

Pushing through because being called lazy, dramatic or difficult somehow feels worse than the crash waiting for you later.

Both can teach us to perform wellness instead of honouring our needs.

Looking fine ≠ feeling fine.

And frankly, nobody should have to audition for their struggle to be believed. 🌶️

Let’s be kinder to one another.

This one practice has genuinely saved my life over the last 15 years and is a profound baseline to embody.

I know it’s easier said than done but this “exercise” is a powerful cornerstone when navigating chronic adversity.

It’s M.E. Awareness Week.

M.E. destroys lives.

It’s harrowing. Devastating. Isolating. Traumatising.

I’ve lived with it for 15 years, and I know what it’s like to wonder if life will ever feel like yours again.

What I’ve learned is this: healing isn’t always linear. Sometimes you climb the same mountain over and over again.

But every step forward matters.

I choose to believe there is always light on the other side—even if it takes longer than we hoped to find it.

To everyone living with M.E.: I see you. I believe you. And you’re not walking this path alone. 💙

🌶️PSA for my SPICYfam… now is not the time to throw in the towel!!

Regroup. Recharge. Restart… as many times as you need.

Make life work for you even if it makes no sense to anyone else.

Be KIND but take no KAK!

Addiction is far more common in the neurodivergent community than most people realise.

I’ve wrestled with it for most of my life. And addiction isn’t always sex, drugs or rock ‘n’ roll… although let’s be honest, they can be seriously fun. 😂

Sometimes it’s your phone.
A trauma bond.
People-pleasing.
Chaos.
The next dopamine hit.

And sometimes.. it’s the story you’ve built around your pain.

That was the hardest pill for me to swallow.

The moment I stopped letting my past define my future, everything started to shift.

Radical accountability isn’t about blame. It’s about reclaiming your power.

What’s one pattern you’ve had to let go of to heal?

Ever feel like you can sense the mood in a room before anyone says a word?

For many people with CPTSD and some neurodivergent people, constantly reading faces, tone, and subtle shifts can become second nature. Not because they’re “too sensitive”—but because their nervous system learned to stay alert.

It’s exhausting.

Dr. Suzman and I unpack why this happens and why understanding it can be so validating.

Does this resonate with you?

One of the biggest differences between neurotypical and neurodivergent experiences isn’t always what we see on the outside—it’s what happens in the seconds before action.

For many neurodivergent people, walking into a room and immediately forgetting why you went there isn’t absent-mindedness or laziness.

It’s often a reflection of how the brain processes transitions, attention, and working memory.

Understanding these small, everyday moments through a neurodiversity-informed lens can shift us from self-judgement to SELF-AWARENESS—and that changes everything.

Have you experienced the “10-second room rule”?

Elevation requires elimination.

You cannot build a FIERCE, UNAPOLOGETIC life while coddling passive bystanders or entertaining low-vibrational jealousy.

These are my hills. I’m standing on them firmly. What boundaries are you refusing to compromise on today?

Let’s talk in the comments. 👇🏼

How much of our health is shaped by what we think, feel, and consume?

In this episode of Call Her Spicy, I sit down with homeopathic Dr. Adam Suzman, founder of Beyond Medicine, who specialises in remedy protocols for neurodivergence to explore the fascinating intersection of NEURODIVERGENCE, emotional wellbeing, homeopathy, and the mind-body connection.

We also dive in the controversial water experiments of Japanese researcher Dr. Massey Emoto and the provocative question: if our thoughts and emotions can influence our internal world, what else may they be impacting?

This episode isn’t about having all the answers - it’s about asking the questions that challenge everything we think we know.

🌶️When I’m left to my own devices with a rarely used festival bag, camera and delicious food supplies.

Did you know that playing and laughing like a child raises your VIBES by triggering molecular shifts in your brain?

This acts as a biological antidepressant, instantly lowering cortisol while flooding the nervous system with endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin.
