I learned these rules at fourteen. Stand all day. Smile through it. Never say no.

They made me good at hair. They also made me tired in a way sleep didn’t fix.

So I rebuilt the chair. I open at 6am because quiet mornings are better for everyone, including me. I stretch between clients. I eat lunch. I tell you the truth about your hair, even when it’s not the answer you walked in with.

None of this made me softer at my craft. It made me better at it.

Emily is back in the chair.
Platinum blonde, then red copper, now a copper root stretch.

“Is this it.”

That’s what most people think after round one of a colour correction.

Round one is about stabilising. Lightener had bled through the lengths and the lift was uneven, so I protected the bonds, evened out the levels, and calmed the harsh tones.

Round two is where it turns. Now I know how your hair lifts, what it fades to, and where it’s been hurt. So I can reposition. Depth back where the placement went wrong. A softer root. A blonde that grows out like it belongs to you.

I always tell new clients this. I’m OK if you don’t get to know me for the next few rounds. This is my time to date your hair. It’s not about me. It’s about you, babe.

You bring the hair and the history. I’ll hold the plan.

Last week Kérastase invited me to the NGV for Power Talks with Adwoa Aboah. I extended the invitation to Elle, who runs her own business within mine. Sharing nights like this with the women I work beside matters to me.

Adwoa has built a career on refusing to be just a face. Model. Activist. Founder of Gurls Talk. Mother. Every role grounded in one thing. Truth.

I sat there beside Elle, a mother of two girls, thinking about my own daughter. About the conversations I never had at her age, and the ones I’m determined she will. About raising girls who never shrink themselves to fit a room.

That’s what I want SJ+Co to be. A space where women are seen, heard and allowed to take up room. Where they build something of their own. The colour is the craft. The conversation is the point.

I came home energised. Clearer. Reminded why I do this.

To the hairdresser who gave it everything today and is completely wiped out.

Times are hard right now. Books are quieter. Clients are stretching appointments. Some days I wonder if it’s enough.

So I keep going back to why I picked up scissors at 14. It was never about the money. It was the moment someone looks in the mirror and softens. They recognise themselves again.

That moment still happens in your chair every day. And it’s all because of you. Seems like a pretty great career if you ask me.

Every colour I create starts with a feeling.

This one started with a sunset.
Molten copper.
Warm amber.
That last flicker of gold before the light slips away.

I wanted colour that glows from within. Colour that shifts every time it catches the light.

The copper I’ve been dreaming of.

Warm like late afternoon light.
