Spirits are currently jubilant in the Jamile bubble.
I’ve been spending a lot of time with this instrument (pictured) and some fruits are ready to be harvested.
Two new songs will be premiered this Sunday, and maybe a third if I can figure out how to play in 7/4 - the oddness and otherness are within me nonetheless.
If free will takes you there, here are the details:
@mezzrowjazzclub
Sunday, 10/25
Sets at 9 and 10:30 pm
Session at 11:30 pm
Band will feature @mikimikiyummy @iamsimonwillson and @jimmy.macbride as usual and necessary.
Whatever else that needs to be said will be expressed somehow regardless of appropriateness at a time nobody can foresee.
Congrats on still being able to read.

This is an excerpt from a live performance of my piece “Feast of the Spirit’s Song” in Montpelier, VT. The ensemble is: Anna Webber (@akwebber) on tenor sax and flute, Aurora Nealand (@auroranealand) on soprano sax and vocals, Yuhan Su (@yuhansuyuhan) on vibraphone, Simón Willson (@iamsimonwillson) on bass, and Lesley Mok (@l.esley) on drums. I am offstage, operating audio samples via MAX/MSP. We had two hourlong rehearsals together. I am so grateful for the opportunity to work with these amazing musicians.
I am currently in the process of revising and updating the score for this piece and will be making it available for purchase on my website. Video of the complete performance can be viewed on my YouTube channel. ☕️😎⚡️ #kentopham #composer #vcfamusiccomp

Much gratitude to David Adler for this detailed overview of my recent work for JazzTimes. As he acknowledges in the piece, there’s a lot of recorded music and different musical topics at hand, and he manages to cover it all while drawing a thematic through line and connecting the dots. Not an easy task, so my sincere thanks to David for this detailed and thoughtful feature:

“Not only is there project after compelling project for varied ensembles, but much of it is on Sun’s own label, Endectomorph Music, which is cranking out work by other emerging artists as well (Dabin Ryu, Hannah Marks, Hayoung Lyou, Simón Willson, many more). It’s legitimately hard to keep up with. (‘Endectomorph’ is Sun’s neologism, fusing endomorph and ectomorph.)

Parse the credits on all these albums and a scene of its own comes into view, centered around venues like Lowlands in Gowanus (Brooklyn) and Close Up on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. (Close Up is launching its own label and holding the inaugural Orchard Street Jazz Festival, September 30-October 5.)

Amid this outpouring, Sun has made room for himself as an assertive leader and prodigious tenor saxophone voice. He’s a deep student of the tradition, of Lester Young, of Bird, of much else beyond the saxophone …

…This is the capital-C composition side of Kevin Sun; his writing is thick with rhythmic and harmonic dissonance and a prevailing mood of abstraction, posing formidable challenges throughout.”
