POV: you stumbled into a fever of sand puppies! 🥹

Yes, a group of rays is called a fever!

And these eagle rays play an essential role in the underwater ecosystem - helping to turn over the seabed and stir up food for other fish by digging in the sand with their faces. They dig their snouts in to find buried shellfish! 🦪

A few more things to love:
👉 They don’t swim, they fly - flapping their fins like wings!
👉 They can sense the tiny electrical signals of prey hiding under the sand
👉 They’re sharks but flatter - rays are close cousins of sharks, with skeletons made of cartilage instead of bone

They’re also Critically Endangered globally - mostly from being caught as bycatch.

Protecting our coastlines means helping keep these beautiful creatures safe too!

About the foundation

I made a painting palette 🎨 for my shell - inspired by all the amazing different coloured glazes on offer! I wanted to drill a hole in the side so complete the illusion but Lucie convinced me it was too risky 🪸

So many colours to choose from, and I used all of them!

My Favourite Wild Places In South Africa: False Bay!

The ocean of Cape Town’s southern beaches has to be one of the most remarkable tracts of ocean in the world. It is incredibly biodiverse, with thousands of species (from humpback whales to nudibranch’s) calling it home. And it is here where I first discovered my love for the ocean and for diving.

Along the coast here, kelp forests grow in adundance and create a sanctuary for wildlife. Exploring these underwater forests while scuba diving or freediving is a magical experience. Shoals of fish glide between the fronds of kelp while puffadder shysharks and pyjama catsharks search for prey in cracks and crevasses. Octopus will watch the world around them from some of these crevasses, usually only emerging at night. Rocky reefs are covered with sea fans, anemones and nudibranch’s, all extraordinarily brightly coloured.

I have had some truly memorable experiences diving here, from being surrounded by 600 dusky dolphins to seeing a hawksbill turtle in the kelp forests. But often the most special moments are when you dive down and are completely immersed in the Great African Seaforest, seeing the light dancing through the water and listening to the crackling of the reef.
