My friend and production manager @simsoncams took some photos at rehearsal for AT THE CORNER OF BROADWAY AND HIP HOP. I love these pictures for many reasons, and I’ll tell some stories in the captions for those who care. OTHERWISE GET YOUR TICKETS TODAY.

I don’t get anxious. Correction, it’s not something I battle with on a regular basis like some of my peers. My general disposition is one of, “eff it we ball”. A healthy dose of optimism and my mother’s consistent belief in my abilities has propelled me through life thus far. However, as I prepare to share what has now turned into a “Hip-Hop song cycle”, I am facing the anxiety that comes with being a beginner at something. Writing rap? That’s fine. Producing an arrangement? Quite easy. Now put it into the context of musical theatre laying bear my soul, as I philosophize through AAVE, and I’m grinding my teeth and biting my cheek, 24/7. Sharing your personal art is scary…and I’ve gone sky diving.

Listening to a phenomenal artist take a thought in your head, and spit it back out to you, I imagine is one of the more intimate things you can do. It feels like cooking for a black grandmother…you are proud of it, but you know her pallet is so refined that she can taste the places where corners were cut…or god forbid she thinks you tried TO HARD and now it’s missing soul!

This is Ian. He is playing bass in the show but is also one of the wiser humans I know. I was explaining how I was anxious, but I was immensely grateful that the band was enjoying playing the music, and he responded with, “well then you’ve already received everything you were searching for.” I said, “damn that’s deep” to which he quickly responded, “you must not be reading your fortune cookies”. That made me laugh.

This is Ray Cetta, and he is playing guitar in this show. He also plays bass and tuba and probably many other instruments I’m not familiar with. He was playfully upset about a chord he has to play in one song…it’s oddly shaped on the guitar, but it was ironically of his own suggestion lol. After we spoke about making it easier, he ended the discussion by saying - “it’s a challenge I want to rise to.” And that’s the type of artists I wan
