Hazratbal Shrine (also known as Dargah Sharif or Madinat-us-Sani) is the most revered Muslim shrine in Kashmir, located on the northern bank of the Dal Lake in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir . • The Sacred Relic: The shrine houses the Moi-e-Muqqadas (also called Assar-e-Sharief), a sacred strand of hair believed to belong to Prophet Muhammad. • Location: Situated about 8 to 10 km from central Srinagar, right along the shore of Dal Lake. You can reach it via road or by a traditional shikara boat ride on the lake. • Name Meaning: The name combines the Urdu word Hazrat (meaning respected or revered) with the Kashmiri word bal (meaning place). History • Origins: The site began in 1623 as a pleasure pavilion called Ishrat Mahal, built by Sadiq Khan, a Mughal subedar under Emperor Shah Jahan. It was converted into a prayer hall in 1634. • Arrival of the Relic: The sacred hair was brought to India from Medina by Syed Abdullah Madani and eventually reached Kashmir around 1700 through the efforts of Kashmiri merchant Khwaja Nur-ud-Din Eshai and his daughter Inayat Begum. • Modern Structure: The current white marble structure with its graceful single dome and minaret was constructed between 1968 and 1979 under the leadership of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. In early 2024, the shrine precinct underwent major beautification and renovation. Visitor Tips • Dress Code & Etiquette: Dress modestly, remove your shoes before entering, and respect local traditions as it is an active and deeply sacred place of worship. • Around the Area: The neighborhood also houses Kashmir University and sits close to other scenic spots like Shalimar Bagh. #instagood #explore #kashmir #srinagar #mewat
