Fun fact: you can’t win if you have already defeated yourself! 🤯

When driven by fear of failure or insecurity, we tend to count ourselves out and chalk down the L before we’ve even had a chance. Sometimes you don’t even have an opponent, you just fabricate one to keep you from winning!

Whether you’re giving, throwing, or stepping foot onto a pitch, the keys to success remain the same:

1) Trust your instincts and preparation
2) Apply full effort
3) Believe in yourself and your ability

In the game of life, the biggest opponent in which you have most control over the outcome is yourself. Tap into your Ted Lasso - you have what it takes to triumph over your inner-bully, time and time again 🏆🥇

Thank you for being a part of our small yet mighty #IBelongHere community. 2022 will bring its share of trials and challenges, but we will work together to make sure self-doubt and Impostor Syndrome don’t make the cut!

Monday memo: don’t let negative thoughts distract you from the truth! No matter what your inner bully or detractors say, you earned your spot at the table.

As we kick off Thanksgiving week, remember to not only be thankful for others but thankful for YOURSELF! After all,

You are talented ✨
You are qualified ✅
You are hard-working ⚡️
You are successful 📈
You are YOU 🥰

Nobody can do you better than you can. Your company and your peers know this, and it’s time you accepted that fact too.

Have an amazing week - YOU BELONG HERE 🖤✨ #ibelonghere

When someone tells you “Good Job” or “Great Work,” you have probably responded with:

🌩 “Oh, it’s not a big deal.”

🌩 “I didn’t really do anything.”

🌩 “It’s not that good compared to [insert name]”

🌩 “I just got lucky.”

We tend to reject recognition because we don’t think we deserve the praise. Your inner bully tries to convince you that your good work does not come from merit and skill, but from lucky shots.

Sports fans love to call successful Hail Mary throws or off-balanced buzzer beater shots “lucky.” Sure, there is an element of luck involved, but there is a reason the Aaron Rodgers, Damian Lillards, and Arike Ogunbowales have a higher success rate than most…

They believe in their ability.

They trained for those moments and developed the skills and CONFIDENCE to execute when asked to deliver. You are no different! Your skill and effort put you in a position to win more often than not 🏆🎉#ibelonghere

P.S. Welcoming credit does not make you selfish! You can still be an awesome, supportive teammate while acknowledging you are worthy of praise. So high-five your teammate and pat yourself on the back, you earned it ✨

Impostor syndrome can cause you to perceive differences as weaknesses. Everyone is unique, but your inner bully makes you think “something’s wrong here” when you notice what separates you from others.

Like many of us, Larek grew up wishing she could be “normal” when comparing herself to the rest of the world. It took her time to stop viewing her hearing as a weakness and embrace it as a strength. Now, she recognizes the power in her differences, and she uses her experiences and confidence to achieve personal goals as well as encourage the generations to follow.

If only one skillset, one look, one perspective was acceptable:

👩🏼‍💼Why are there multiple seats in a boardroom?

🙋🏾‍♂️Why are discussion-based courses part of academic curriculum?

💃🏿Why do multiple models walk the runway?

⛹🏾‍♂️Why do sports teams recruit different types of athletes for the same positions?

Our society still needs to work on valuing all differences, but the most successful teams cannot thrive without diversity in thought, perspective, and experience.

Stand out. You belong here, but you’re way too special to fit in! #ibelonghere 🖤✨

Imagine if you could get a good night's sleep, avoid getting stuck in traffic, forget about personal matters, and never deal with unnecessary stress. Imagine your daily productivity! 🚀📈

But let's face it - such an ideal is a fantasy. Traffic exists. Family deaths happen. Personal issues come up. Racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia rear their ugly heads. So why do we expect ourselves to perform like we live in a perfect world?

You may not be perfect, but the world isn't either. Cut yourself some slack! It's okay to not be on your A-game around the clock, especially when life doesn't always hold up its end of the bargain.

If NFL players weren't afforded bad games or even bad seasons, we would have never heard of Peyton Manning or Walter Payton. Morgan Freeman didn't get his big break until he was 52. You can bet the voice of God experienced his fair share of poor auditions!

Time to normalize off days. You can have a Hall of Fame career and stumble along the way 🖤✨ #ibelonghere

Emmitt Smith didn't know if he belonged in the NFL. Yes, you read that correctly - the record holder for career rushing yards and rushing touchdowns questioned whether he belonged alongside his talented peers!

We all know that facts and stats don't stand a chance against Impostor Syndrome. Impostor Syndrome tells you to ignore ten great games because you had one bad day. Why are we assessing our performance by the outlier??

Professional athletes function in a high-pressure environment, where you are loved when you succeed and are hated when you fail. A lot of fans say "well they get paid a lot of money to perform," which makes athletes feel like they cannot talk about their mental struggles.

Fortunately, athletes like Naomi Osaka and Simone Biles are starting to share their self-doubt and insecurities despite being the world's best in their respective sports.

Impostor syndrome seems like a problem dealt with by average people, yet the reality is quite the opposite. Reasons you deal with Impostor thoughts include:

⛈ Finding yourself in increasingly talented environments

⛈ Setting unrealistic expectations for your performance

⛈ Minimizing success while amplifying mistakes

⛈ Rejecting praise while embracing criticism

An average person wouldn't experience any of these factors!

You don't have to break records to be valuable or successful. You already won by making it to where you are today. Believe in yourself - you are the reason you made it to the table 🖤✨ #ibelionghere

I love and hate that I started a conversation about imposter syndrome.

I love that so many people now realise they're not alone & that there's a name for it.

We outed the elephant in the room. 🐘

They realise that feeling like an imposter is a common experience & that it doesn't mean we necessarily don't belong there.

I hate that it's called a syndrome, and honestly if it wasn't a commonly searched term, I'd be calling it imposterism/imposter thoughts instead.

BUT

I still see so many people owning it as a fault. Or still being surprised it appears when they're doing some really awesome stuff.

It's an experience not an identity.

It WILL pop up.

Heck, the sneaky little gremlin still pops up for me, but I just understand it differently.

It's not because I'm a fraud (a criminal 🤦🏼‍♀️), it's because I'm pushing comfort zones. It wants me to stay safe, small. What if I'm doing something BIG or NEW? Or maybe I just need to sit and focus on the facts to give myself a bit more credit.

Often I need to release a bit of pressure on myself. We never chose those pressures.

Is that inner critic suggesting that I should know everything?
Would it make me a fraud not to know everything?
No.

Is it asking me to do everything on my own?
Would asking for help make me a fraud?
No.

Is it trying to show me all the people who are doing a better job?
Would not being the best at something mean I don't deserve to be there?
No.

That's the time to be kinder to ourselves.

You are capable. This isn't about being blasé or doing things out of our skill level.

This is us saying "OK I'm feeling a little self doubt, that's ok"...I acknowledge you BUT I DESERVE TO BE HERE, as I am, and I'm dropping the BS stipulations of the inner critic telling me I'm not worthy.

You deserve to be in every room you're in. Whether inner or outer critics say you don't, let's realign the rules and REMEMBER WHO WE REALLY ARE.

You're 1 in 400 trillion.

Of course you can do it, if you give yourself a chance and realise that sometimes feeling what we label as imposter syndrome is normal, a sign to maybe let go of some pressures, talk, ask for help, and go do whatever the heck is important to YOU.

Is it possible to fit ALL of your skills on a sheet of paper? Of course not! Yet applications requiring you to pick and choose skills to put on your resumé might naturally limit your perceived qualifications.

We tend to limit ourselves to the traits we deem relevant to the position, but we often neglect other qualities that are equally valuable because we take them for granted. So, it feels like you’re “faking it” when you end up mentioning attributes that aren’t on the piece of paper you handed to the interviewer.

No company is going to hire someone that does not add value to their business. They reviewed numerous resumés, many of which ticked all of the boxes you wish yours did, yet they gave YOU the position. Quit trying to build your career around the tool you don’t have and start leaning on the laundry list of tools you already possess! 🛠📈

You have more proficiencies and abilities than what you put down on your resumé. Don’t feel like you’re about to be found out as a fraud. Instead, recognize yourself for what you are - a great player that adds value to your team!

Happy Friday, and give yourself a break this weekend - you deserve it! 🖤✨ #ibelonghere
