Iris Bernblum: Palliative Sedation
October 25 - December 2, 2026

Palliative Sedation is the second iteration of Human / Nature, a body of work Iris Bernblum has been developing throughout 2026. The series grows out of what Bernblum calls her “conspiracy theory”: that the legalization of marijuana across much of the United States has coincided with the rise of the Right, a kind of mass sedation of a Left already in a state of overwhelm. Amid rising authoritarianism, violence, xenophobia, and environmental collapse, Bernblum is interested in how we cope, collectively and individually, through substances, escapism, and screens, and in the blurring line between truth and fiction.

What an honor to talk about Mernet Larsen‘s compositions and process. I often stumbled through because despite preparing, the paintings kept revealing new relationships, juxtapositions, and unexpected twists! I went from fan to SUPERFAN 🤩

Chicago is so lucky to have this work on view @artsclubchicago . The work must be viewed in person. Nothing is as it seems on a screen.

Image #4: Booth is included in the show and is a self-portrait (blond block head) of the artist, her husband and close friend. It was pointed out to me after the talk how expressive the eyes are. Indeed! Just wow.

Chicago-based artist Iris Bernblum is a cross-disciplinary, conceptually based artist. She explores ideas around human nature, power, and vulnerability, focusing primarily on the way we frame our sense of self in regard to our current capitalist culture and its commodification of nearly every natural impulse. More recently, Bernblum has been looking closely at what she calls "algorithmic mirroring" as a kind of radically honest self-portraiture.

2025, quite a pivotal year which contained: playing host to two meditation retreats (probably my favourite thing I’ve ever done); teaching extraordinary people in new places: Zurich, Berlin, the Austrian Alps, Athens, Patmos; loving old friends in deeper ways; remembering that even amongst global conflict that humans can be so loving and so kind and this is what our practice propagates; adoring the world and it’s miraculous details and feeling so grateful for being in this body to see them (watching whales throw their huge bodies into the air, seeing the Austrian cows come home); attending the largest gathering of people in the history of the world at the Maha Kumbh Mela (casual); a month in my beloved Greece; circumnavigating the world; teaching the Vedas and experiencing waves of bliss, seeing how the knowledge changes people; meditating and beginning to fully feel at all moments there is unboundedness to life; learning, always and always, and f*cking up a few things; and then finally meeting a giant walking green flag who has completely and utterly stolen my heart. Took me 36 years to be ready for that one. It still hit me like a tsunami.
What will 2026 bring? There’s only one possible answer!: Let’s see.
