I had a fantastic morning connecting with Isa on the 6th of March, as she shared some of the ins and outs of the different spheres of the art world. She told stories about making, her teaching as well as exciting news about her future plans.

Isa describes various experiences from participating in art fairs in Istanbul (as a gallerist) to Cape Town (as an artist) that took us behind the scenes. It is expensive to show work at an art fair; it is a huge investment and there are no guarantees that the work on display will sell despite the high volumes of people who view it. However, Isa emphasised that it is important to put yourself out there and spoke about the performance aspect to selling art. “Art is more than visual, it's about stories, it's about performance”. That is why she encourages her students to not only nurture their creative practice, but to practise performance to prepare them for the commercial art space.

While Isa works in the commercial art space, she is also a practising artist and brought a work in progress piece to share with us. When asked, how do you know when you’ve finished a piece, she responded, “you learn when to stop” and that there is “something beautiful about the suggestion”. Otherwise, you run the risk of over doing it.

The conversation moved to art and survival and how artists use different avenues whether it be completing commission work for patrons, teaching art skills, or operating in the academic or commercial space to make a living. Isa's exciting news is that she's working towards working with her art network to establish herself in France! Watch her space!

To end off an informing conversation, one of our guests Jenny shared with us a bit about her artistic journey and what inspires her to create. Jenny believes that we are made up of stardust, and shared a moving anecdote that grounds her practice. When she was young, she was given the name Inkanyezi ubaba (star of her father) upon the observation of how she lit up in his presence. This planted a seed for the art practice she would later develop around movement gestures and the radial symmetry of stars. The fluidity of liquid acrylics became an apt m

My sincere thanks to Isa and @ibiart for fascilitating the transformative process for the artists to work with the learners to create the deeply insightful pieces for each of the themes.

@ibiart uses art to teach, change behaviour, for meditation, play and fun. They support artists and exhibit new , up and coming and more established artists . They place purpose and passion together through their art classes, corporate and community workshops.
