Reimagining the Archive : Black Memory & Design Praxis

Saturday Panel 2 : The Future of the Place-Based Living Archive

Idris Brewster, Melody Capote, Mordecai Cargill, Steven Fullwood, jah Elyse Sayers (moderator)

Saturday, Sep 19th, 11:45am-1:15pm
Spitzer School of Architecture Auditorium Rm. 107

Idris Brewster is the Executive Director of Kinfolk Foundation, an augmented reality archive that puts the power of monument making and historical preservation into the hands of Black and Brown communities. He is a Brooklyn-born artist and creative technologist that disrupts traditional narratives through spatial experiences, all the while empowering others to do the same.

Melody Capote is executive director of the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute in East Harlem. Instrumental in developing CCCADI into a vital institution dedicated to the preservation of African Diaspora culture, she and the CCCADI team have undertaken a robust archiving project in advance of CCCADI’s 50th anniversary.

Mordecai Cargill is a co-founder and Creative Director of ThirdSpace Action Lab. Located in their own space in Cleveland’s historic Black East Side, Mordecai and Thirdspace are undertaking Chocolate Cities Cleveland, a multimedia mapping and archive project to preserve collective memory.

Steven Fullwood is an archivist, writer, and cultural documentarian. He is co-director of the Nomadic Archivists Project (with Miranda Mims), a pioneering initiative that partners with individuals, community groups, organizations, and institutions to establish, preserve, and enhance collections that illuminate the global Black experience.

Jah Elyse Sayers (moderator) is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the CUNY graduate center. While research associate for the PMCI, they have co-facilitated the Harlem Place Memory & Culture Archive. Their work is focused on embodied, enacted, and relational placemaking in tension with public-space planning, research, and policy.

Did you miss this delightful conversation with @iblss and @amydevers conversation the first time around? Now's your chance to tune in as we continue to journey throgh favorite episodes from the past 10 years!

Artist, creative technologist, and educator, Idris Brewster grew up in Brooklyn, being filmed for a documentary about his education as a black student at a prestigious, primarily white, school. His coming-of-age, only partially caught on camera, included a lot of basketball and hands-on artistic development. A grant awarded in college gave him early access to VR technology which opened a path to combining all of his talents and interests and expressing them through new media.

Since his episode aired in 2024, Idris and the team at @kinfolktech have been busy! Last year, they piloted their first Community Memory Fellowship, created their first festival and exhibition, and continued to partner with artists, institutions, and grassroots organizations. He became an @ashokaglobal Fellow in 2025, continuing to transform place-based memory into a new form of strategic civic power.

@mvaaff was magical. Between being around family, meeting incredible filmmakers, and hearing how Black leaders of today and tomorrow are creating opportunities for advancement, I'm full of pride, inspiration, and ideas for the future. I have no doubt as @kishshanapalmer said many times, the answer was in the room. Now it's our responsibility to bring it to fruition.

Can't wait for everything @film4goodfund has in store for the rest of this year and beyond. With these filmmakers leading the way, the future is bright ☀️

(PS none of this would be possible for us without my father James Alston, 2nd generation of 4 on the island — last two photos)

“In this day and age, what’s really important is for us to create tools that are powered by people, built with people, and built for people.” - Idris Brewster, Founder & Executive Director of Kinfolk Tech.

At Kinfolk, we want to build technology FOR you and WITH you.

That’s why we’re inviting you to join us for our Community Voice* demo sessions! In these sessions we share early looks at the new platform we’re building—designed to help individuals and communities collect, preserve, and share stories, memories, and cultural history.

Whether you’re an archivist, educator, organizer, artist, technologist, or simply someone who believes our stories deserve to be preserved, your feedback during this session will directly shape how our community voice archive evolves.

Such a great resource!

Every day, we brace ourselves for the impact of another decision made by Trump and the ruling class, interpreting what it will mean for our livelihood and our futures. As conditions rapidly transform and the ruling class consolidates behind Trump’s billionaire agenda, this moment calls for us to organize. When overwhelm and fear fights to settle in your spirit, let this moment radicalize you.

The health and safety of our people are actively under attack, and the lives of our friends and loved ones are changing before our eyes. We know it feels scary right now, but you are not alone.

Harnessing your political power through organizing means you can provide direct support to the people in your community and challenge the power dynamics that harm us. Dream Defenders is in this fight to empower Black, Brown, Indigenous and working people to fight for our shared vision of a future where we are all free from racial capitalism. We hope you join us!

Tonight, I had the chance to meet one of my literary heroes in person Edwidge Danticat (I read Krik? Krak! twice when I was pregnant in 1995) at @truenorthdocumentary theatrical screening with director @michele_0608. TRUE NORTH is a gorgeous artistic and well crafted story about a Black student uprising in Halifax, Nova Scotia and more. I highly recommend!

I ❤️ NYC and I ❤️ HISTORY

🪶📜What’s your wish for the next 250 years of the United States?

This summer, Made By Us is inviting Gen Z to share their vision for the next chapter in a Letter to America. Here’s @kinfolk founder Idris Brewster’s take.

In order to build the kind of country we want, we must be able to imagine it first. Letters to America is a national, youth-driven civic initiative calling on young people ages 14 to 30 to share their vision for what this country should become.

Through writing, video, art, and more, Gen Z is putting forward their own declarations — reflecting on the past, responding to the present, and imagining what the next 250 years should look like. Head to the link in bio to read Letters to America and write your own.

BLACK & INDIGENOUS SOLIDARITY

Repost from @intelligentmischief

The theme for this week has been collaboration. Because everything worth doing is done together. Do it together.
.
What if we wrote new stories that engender solidarity, mutuality, and shared prosperity?
