CONGRATULATIONS EVA!! eva (ACAD BFA in Fibre 2020) has recently opened her solo exhibition, Tresses in the Tide, organized by @iccontemporary, on view via appointment until March 1st, at @xinresidence. 🌊🧵 Tresses in the Tide represents the intersections of Black identity and natural acts of defiance, weaving together the strength of human and ecological survival against all odds. This body of work stems from years of personal research from Calgary-based artist eva birhanu. It explores themes of racism, colonialism, diaspora, and survival, with a particular focus on the enduring strength of Black bodies in the face of historical and ongoing oppression. eva birhanu is an interdisciplinary artist working in Calgary, Alberta, Treaty 7 Territory. Born in Canada to immigrant parents from Denmark and Ethiopia, she focuses on identity and race in her work. eva works in mediums of fibre and sculpture, auto-ethnographically exploring exoticism and objectification. eva recently graduated with distinction from Alberta University of the Arts with a BFA in Fibre. She is currently the Co-Artistic Director at Stride Gallery. Congratulations eva on such an amazing accomplishment. 👏👏✨🥳 We can’t wait to see what you’ll do next! 2024 Photo-Kaleidoscope It's funny how my brain tricks me into creating a picture of overall despondency even when I go to a photo gallery and see a solid kaleidoscope of events, travels, and art projects. Despite all the advantages of this year, where I generated frantic activity, involving everyone around me, I still feel like the ground has been knocked out from under my feet, putting me into a life of forced immigrant and not seeing my family from Ukraine for 3 years. I realized how valuable the feeling of having a home is and how its absence distorts the perception of reality. But all the epic failures on the way to successful success are compensated by a look at the incredible beauty of nature that I had a chance to gaze on with a person with whom I can share the challenges on my way. Happy New 2025 everyone! I wish you not to get tricked by illusions of the modern world on the path to your truthful happiness. #2024 #kaleidoscope #memories #travels #art #love

2024 in WERK. Went out of my comfort zone constantly and grew more than I can even comprehend. - Finished the WITS program with @canmuspub and all the baddies (shoutout to @yamahacanmusic for the swag) - Miami Art week with @iccontemporary and @trippy - Worked my (hopefully) last few live sound gigs!! - Beautiful collaborations in the studio and performing live 🩷 - So impressed by my students at @professionalmusic_tmu - @applemusic song camp with the girlies - Went to @thenammshow with the @sheqaudio and hung out with @ohmaworld - Ran live sound workshops for @cmincubator - Demo’s for @mcdsp at @imstafesta - Composing with @slowrisemusiccanada - Learned how to build shit And I started my masters degree in production and so much moreeeee. I’m exhausted and grateful. Currently resting up in Costa Rica to prepare for what’s to come in 2025.

Read The Room In the beginning of this year, @thirdeye.wav , @sameshanedifferentday and I got together to start a new Queer Collective, @readtheroom.co . We wanted to create a space where everyone under the queer umbrella was welcome, and try to bridge the gaps we see within queer communities. Working with Shane’s incredible eye of design and Sara’s incredible curation of music, we kept pushing the envelope of what we could do with the brand. We wanted to create something meaningful, well thought-out, and intentional. I was ready to challenge myself by taking the next step in Motion Graphics and play around with Animations. I started experimenting more in After Effects, learning and understanding what else I could do with the program. Soon into it, Read The Room became a playground to me, and my inner child started having the most fun it’s ever had. You can see the progression of my skills and how they developed more and more over the span of months. I also started making visuals for the events, inspired by visuals made for DJs on big stages which was a big dream of mine. Little did I know what doors I was opening for myself. This project has been the most life-changing one for me. Creating it with two incredibly talented, creative, passionate and supportive people, we each put our entire hearts into it. Whenever I doubted or didn’t believe in myself enough, these two lifted me up, encouraged me, and taught me how to believe in myself. Their endless support and encouragement truly changed who I am to my core, and has made me become a more confident version of myself. They helped me push myself to a point where even I have started surprising myself by what I’m capable of doing, and started seeing what they saw in me. One thing about me - I don’t do this for the money, and I don’t do it for recognition.
