It’s crazy to think I’m on my way to Antarctica for the 4th time. My camera has taken me to some incredible places around the world, but nothing compares to this remote continent, and I feel so privileged to get to snowboard among the penguins.

That’s how Bruce Chatwin described his departure from the city at the end of the world in his famous book “In Patagonia” from the 1980th.

I feel quite the opposite.

I can hardly wait to be back.

The mountains above the Beagle Channel, the wind, the snow, and that extraordinary sense of being at the very edge of the world.

But most of all, I’m looking forward to seeing so many good friends and fellow mountain guides from Ice Axe Expeditions again.

We’ll start with some beautiful ski touring around Glaciar Martial, warming up our legs before setting sail for our Antarctic expedition.

Sometimes the end of the world is exactly where you want to be.

It feels strange to be in a place where humans never established a civilization. No indigenous people, no ancient settlements, no traces of human history stretching back thousands of years.

Antarctica is a place of breathtaking beauty. Yet it is also a world where we humans could barely survive without protection.

The pack ice, the cold, the silence. None of it was made for us. We are strangers here, guests for just a fleeting moment 🙏

From surfing the south coast of NSW to chasing winters around the globe, meet Bill Barker! Bill’s ski story started with a one-week holiday in 1987, a dishwashing job, and a backcountry skiing obsession that never let up. 🤙 These days, he splits his time between hemispheres, running Bill’s Trips in Gulmarg, Kashmir, during northern winters and serving as Ski Patrol Director at his beloved Mt. Hotham down south. When he’s not guiding, patrolling, or exploring the mountains, you’ll probably find him hanging off a rock face or catching waves back home in Ulladulla.

🏄‍♂️🧗‍♂️ With decades of winters under his belt and no shortage of adventures left to chase, Bill is the definition of a life well spent outdoors. Swipe him a forecast, point him toward some fresh snow, and he’s probably already packing his bags! 🌎❄️
