Rising from the waters of Saadiyat Island, Louvre Abu Dhabi was conceived by Jean Nouvel as a museum city beneath a vast floating dome. A collection of low, white buildings, passages and waterfront spaces recalls the dense fabric of a traditional Arab medina while creating a gradual transition between interior galleries, shaded plazas and the surrounding sea.

The defining element is the 180-metre-wide dome, composed of eight overlapping layers and 7,850 differently sized geometric stars. Sunlight passes through the layered pattern to produce the museum’s celebrated “rain of light,” an effect inspired by light filtering through palm leaves. Despite weighing approximately 7,500 tonnes, the dome appears to float because it is supported at only four concealed points.

The complex brings together 55 individual buildings beneath the canopy, including 23 gallery structures. Its architecture combines large-scale structural engineering with carefully controlled daylight, climate and marine conditions, allowing the museum to operate as both a protected exhibition environment and an open public landscape connected to the Arabian Gulf.
