CULTURAL DILEMMAS.

Today, I participated in a training organised by the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC) on “Cultural Dilemmas in Negotiation and Mediation.”

One thought stayed with me: culture is never merely in the background of a conflict. It is often right there in the middle of the room.

People do not enter negotiations as blank slates. We bring our values, upbringing, beliefs, communication styles, perceptions of authority, attitudes towards time, approaches to conflict, and ideas about respect with us.

What one person considers confidence, another may perceive as disrespect.
Silence may mean agreement in one context and disagreement in another.
Directness may communicate honesty to one person and aggression to another.

This is why effective mediation requires more than knowing the process.

It requires cultural intelligence, the ability to remain curious, recognise differences without stereotyping, ask the right questions, listen beyond words, and create a process in which every party feels seen and understood.

A mediator must resist the temptation to interpret everyone and every situation through the lens of their own culture.

Perhaps one of the most important lessons is that before we attempt to resolve what separates people, we must first understand the lenses through which they see the situation.

It was a productive day of learning, reflection, and professional growth.

GOOD NEWS!

About twenty years ago in School, I encountered Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) through my lecturer, the late Prof. Kevin Nwosu; a brilliant and passionate lecturer. That single encounter sparked my love for Mediation, and it has guided me ever since.

With every short course and experience, I found that whenever conflict arises, or I have to resolve disputes in my workplace, mediation is the first door I want to open.

One of my goals this year was to take this passion to the next level.

I committed to the training, invested and embraced it more. Today, I'm excited to announce that I’ve been inducted as an Associate of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (AICMC)

This means a lot to me and I'm looking forward to the next level.

I'm more inspired, energised and committed to the work of ADR and judicial development.

Are you passionate about conflict resolution and national development? You may want to explore and experience this field.

Let's connect.
The journey continues.

🎉 Thrilled to have attended the 2025 ADR Conference hosted by the ICMC - Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators!

The theme, "Behavioural Patterns and Societal Disintegration: Mediation as an Option for Social Cohesion," was incredibly insightful and timely.

A major highlight for me was the powerful presentation by Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah on the critical role of mediation as a preventive measure in highly charged and potentially violent environments. The idea that 'mediation can actively plug issues before they escalate into disputes' was a key takeaway echoed by several speakers and truly resonates with my work.

As an Intellectual Property Lawyer and a Chartered Mediator & Conciliator with a passion for Creative Industry Financing, I believe this preventive approach is vital for ensuring stability and growth across all sectors.

This caption is sooooo formal 😂 Anyway, I enjoyed it but I'm also glad it ended, I need a 48-hour nap 😭.

Refining the Art of Conflict Resolution and Leadership.

Last week, I participated in a Mediation Accreditation and Certification Training course.
Although this wasn’t my first exposure to mediation, it was a deeply impactful refresher.

On Day 1, something unexpected happened.

I was elected Class Governor for the July Cohort.

What made it even more surprising?
I didn’t know a single person in the class prior to the training! Yet, I was entrusted with leadership.

By Day 2, during a simulation exercise, we were divided into groups.
When it was time for my group to present, many members felt I should take the lead; being “the leader” and “the vocal one” (as some said 😅).

But leadership isn’t always about standing in front.

I believed someone else should take that opportunity.

Someone the group didn’t expect.

I insisted and nominated someone else to present.
He was reluctant for a short while but eventually agreed.
He represented the group.

Later, during the tea break, he came to me and said something that touched my heart.

He said: "My Governor, thank you for believing in me even when I didn't believe in myself."

That moment struck me.

Why?

Both mediation and leadership are about trust, humility, and helping others rise and shine.

This course reminded me of timeless principles:

✅ Impartiality
✅ Active listening
✅ Trust-building
✅ Empowering others to speak and be heard.

So whether you’re a leader, communicator, or team player, mediation is a skill worth learning.
The world doesn’t just need more voices.
It needs more peacemakers. 🤝

I am one!

As I bring my National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year to a close, my heart is filled with gratitude and a deep sense of fulfillment. What began as an uncertain journey, eventually transformed into a defining chapter. The past 12 months have been nothing short of transformative, marking my growth from a budding law graduate to an all-rounder with a solid foundation.

I was posted to the prestigious law firm of @leximperatoresllp which was more than an assignment; it was an opportunity of a lifetime. Under the astute guidance of my Principal, @mbjabdulazeez I learnt the intricacies of law and was nurtured in the values of diligence, resilience, and ethical practices. It went beyond tutelage within the courtroom, I was shaped into a better individual, grounded in principles that will carry me throughout my career. @iam_meghan_ My Mama.

It is no gainsaying highlighting my attachment to Ademolaw Toye Law Firm @ademolaw1, I appreciate his dedication to excellence and commitment to nurturing young minds.

The people I met along the way made this journey even more beautiful. My colleagues at Lex Imperatores LLP, and my CDS buddies at @mindthe_gapng, @sherifat_harun @sa_arat @coco.eby01 the camaraderie at MCAN FCT Chapter where I served as the Organizing Secretary, added color to the experience, and it made the service year a blend of hard work and moments of pure fun for me.

I am deeply grateful to ny university friends @dauda_ag @jola.olu @ms_bolatife stood by me through thick and thin; My mentors outside the jurisdiction of Abuja, @dtopesalami, @shehu_popson ; whoss encouragement has been a constant strenght- I say Thank you.

As I close this Chapter, I carry with me the incredible memories and I am looking forward to what lies ahead.
