8 years ago I met Chris Ramsay when I started working at Prairie Arts Center, and 3 years later I started metal smithing because of him. He taught a class at Prairie for people who wanted to teach because he wanted more opportunities for his community. For a semester, he spent evenings with us, donating his time.

If you knew Chris, he was the first to get excited with you about a project, to help troubleshoot, to help develop an idea, to ask questions that really made you think about what you were doing. He was the biggest supporter and cheerleader to all he crossed paths with.

What he taught me has laid a foundation for creativity and looking at the world in ways I hadn’t before.

We are forever grateful for your love and thoughtful attention, Chris. Until we meet again 🤍

Yesterday, Tulsa World published a wonderful article and interview with our former Jewelry and Metals professor, Chris Ramsey, alongside Courtney Kelly, Missy Kaiser, and Althea Lackey. Former students of Chris all contributed a piece to one large artwork dedicated to him and the hard work he put into the Art Department and the Jewelry and Metals program.
A quote from the article:
"Ramsay first described the entirety of the piece as a mirror before saying: 'It’s more a ripple and a sharing of education. The crafts and the arts, they are not a secret. They are to be shared. And there is a whole community, a whole huge community, outside of what we do in the classroom. I think this is a demonstration of that.'"

A colleague took me into this amazing guitar store in Tulsa yesterday where I saw former student Courtney Lynn’s (now Kelly) incredible design work on two guitars (second photo). Sorry, I should have photographed both sides. If you are in Tulsa check them out. This is a mixed media drawing I did of Courtney titled: Portrait of Courtney Lynn/Beauty & the Beast circa 1995?
