You may have heard the myth that Boise State’s blue turf looks so much like a pond that ducks and geese crash-land on it. But did you know a lighthearted publicity spot may have helped the story take flight?

While the story isn’t true, Boise State has certainly had fun with it over the years. In 2009, when the Broncos played the University of Oregon Ducks, Boise State sold popular game-day T-shirts reading, “The Myth Is True, Ducks Do Crash On The Blue.”

Discover even more history behind the iconic blue turf in "Gridiron Innovations: The Kibbie Dome, the Minidome & the Blue," premiering Thursday, October 22, at 8 p.m. on Idaho Public Television!

It started in late-1950s Boise, where Herb Uhl began modifying Honda motorcycles for Idaho’s backcountry.

Uhl added knobby tires, a larger rear sprocket and other modifications to make the lightweight bikes more capable off-road. His modified bikes became a hit in Boise, selling so well that California Honda sales manager Jack McCormack took notice. He asked Uhl if he could test the prototype, so Uhl sent one of his converted bikes to California for him to inspect. McCormack was so impressed that he sent the bike to Honda in Japan with a request to build a production version of Uhl’s off-road adaptation.

The lightweight, easy-to-ride Trail 50 opened up backcountry riding to hunters, anglers and adventurers, launching a legacy that continues today. Over the decades, the CT series of bikes has sold well over 725,000 in the U.S. and become a beloved part of motorcycle culture around the world.

When asked if Honda ever compensated him for his innovation, Herb simply said, “Not a cent.” But he didn’t seem to mind. “I put millions of smiles on people’s faces.”

Hear Herb’s story and discover more about the origins of the iconic bike in "Ridin’ Trail," premiering October 22 at 7pm on Idaho Public Television.

When ESPN’s College GameDay came to Boise, there was no shortage of blue.

Lee Corso got into the spirit, painting his face blue for the broadcast and Boise State head coach Chris Petersen chose looked at swatches for the new carpet in his office.

Petersen recalled the reaction from the crew: “They’re looking at me like I got five heads, like, why would you want blue carpet? And of course I’d want blue carpet. What other color would there be?”

This story is just one of many featured in Idaho Experience’s newest program, "Gridiron Innovations: The Kibbie Dome, The Minidome & The Blue," exploring the stories and innovations behind three of Idaho’s most recognizable football landmarks.

Tune-in for the premiere Thursday, Oct. 22 at 8pm on Idaho Public Television.

Nearly 40 years ago, Boise State Athletic Director Gene Bleymaier was on a flight thinking about replacing the school’s aging turf.

Looking down at the green fields below, he had an idea. There was no reason Boise State’s turf had to be green. Why not use the school’s colors? That idea would go on to become college football history.

In the summer of 1986, Boise State installed the nation’s first non-green artificial football field. The Blue debuted on September 13 of that year with a 74-0 win over Humboldt State.

Since installing the blue turf, Boise State has gone 205-45 at home, an incredible .820 winning percentage.

Last week at Lookout Point was full of books, questions, creativity, movement, and lots of PLAY. Families explored activities with our community partners, kids took home a FREE book thanks to GFiber, and Student United Way of ISU helped make sure those books made it home with families. The ISU Bengal Dancers brought the energy, and Sweet Carts gave us a sweet way to end the afternoon. 💛

Thank you to everyone who joined us, participated, volunteered, and helped create these summer moments for local families. We loved getting to READ, TALK, and PLAY with you!
