@idamitrani’s course ‘Textures and Tones in Summer Leaves’ explored the rich diversity of Irish summer foliage, focusing on the wide variety of greens, textures, and forms found in leaves. Through careful observation, participants developed a deeper understanding of the structure and form of leaves while experimenting with drawing and watercolour.

Visual artist Ida Mitrani shared insights into her Botanical art practice, guiding participants through her creative process. Using examples from her sketchbooks and preparatory studies, she demonstrated how close observation forms the foundation of expressive botanical drawing. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of line, showing how expressive mark-making can capture the vitality, movement, and character of leaves.

The workshop highlighted drawing as an essential method of seeing and understanding. Participants were encouraged to deconstruct natural forms into their basic shapes and structures before reconstructing them through observation and interpretation. Alongside these drawing exercises, Ida introduced fundamental watercolour techniques, enabling participants to explore colour, tone, layering, and transparency while responding to the subtle variations found in Irish summer foliage.

Ida also presented her wider visual arts practice, discussing her current exhibition in Brittany with her collective. The presentation examined how her work pushes the boundaries of drawing and plant representation through large-scale installations, demonstrating how botanical subjects can evolve from intimate sketches into immersive contemporary artworks.

Thank you dear visiting artists for three days of focused, patient and hugely rewarding work! Thank you dear Ida for sharing so generously and expertly your vast knowledge, experience and insights into your multifaceted practice.

✨Member Monday!

Today we're celebrating not 1 but 3 members - Rebecca Bradley @memorygram, Ida Mitrani @idamitrani, and Caroline Boyfield @carolineboyfield - who, together with Laure Colomer @laurecolomer, make up the Embardée Collective @embar.dee. Their latest exhibition 'Kefloc'had' is on display at La Prébendale, Saint-Pol-de-Léon, France until 20 September.

This new exhibition is the latest that these artists have developed through collaborative and reciprocal artist residencies between Cork City and Finistère, Brittany. We were delighted to support this work at its outset in 2024, when we hosted the exhibition 'MARITIME' in TRISKEL SAMPLE Project Space @triskel_cork (26 June - 2 September 2024). It's wonderful to see this fantastic work continue.

'Kefloc'had' explores the metamorphoses of the coastline, addressing the notions of hybridisation, mutation, and the fragility of coastal ecosystems. The artists offer a sensory and speculative interpretation of these shifting environments, shaped by currents, tides, and the memory of the place. It marks a key milestone for the collective, demonstrating its commitment to exploring the sea as a space for interaction and shared creation.

We’ve been quietly working away, and now we’re ready to share just a glimpse…

Shortly, a new creative journey begins — Inspired by the Sea ✨

In collaboration with artist Ida Mitrani, we’re launching a series of immersive, experimental workshops shaped by the rhythms, textures, and mysteries of the marine world. Think seawater, seaweed, hidden marks, unexpected materials… and a chance to create in ways you may never have tried before.

This isn’t about perfect outcomes — it’s about curiosity, play, and seeing where the process leads 🌊

💙 Free to attend all thanks to support from @corkcountycouncil – Artist in the Community Scheme

We’ll be kicking things off with something special… a seaweed forage walk led by a guest artist 👀
More details coming soon.

For now, just save the dates, stay curious… and keep an eye on the tide 🌊✨

Our co-curated group show, Meant to Fade, closes this weekend! Saturday, July 1st is the final day to see the diverse collection of works at Laneway Gallery that celebrate alternative materials, slow processes, care, and ephemerality.
🪱
We are having a closing event on Saturday evening from 5-7 pm for one final look at the works and another chance to converse and connect with artists, friends, and an interested public.
🪱
At the closing event, we will also be launching a small publication that was made in conjunction with the show. It includes creative essays, poetry, images, and musings expanding on the themes of the show: precarity, complexity, regeneration, and connection to place.
🪱
We will have readings from the publication and a casual discussion/Q&A with curator Katerina Gribkoff, contributor Dr. Eileen Hutton, and artists from the show. Come along and get a peak at the small publication and have a chance to ask questions regarding the curation of the exhibit and the practices of the artists involved.
🪱
The publication is meant to provoke new imaginings of what art and making can and should be. It leads the ideas, themes, and materials of the show out from the gallery and into the wider world, into the hands and homes of others interested in ecological art and care-full practices.
🪱
The publication, also titled Meant to Fade, was edited by Katerina Gribkoff and designed by Malú Colorín.
