Fabriquer un jardin #lepointdujour (->18 octobre)

"Le jardin, thème du festival Normandie impressionniste de cette année, revêt évidemment de multiples aspects - activité de loisir et production marchande, décorum architectural ou encore création paysagère. Sans exclure ces dimensions, l'exposition envisage plutôt le jardin comme un processus de fabrication dont des artistes contemporains ont fait le sujet, voire la matière de leurs œuvres.

Fabriquer un jardin ne vise pas un objectif circonscrit; c'est une pratique tantôt personnelle tantôt collective, qui met en relation des techniques, des espaces et des temporalités, y compris imaginaires. Dans le contexte actuel de crise climatique et d'interrogations sur le vivant, fabriquer un jardin implique un rapport au monde, une manière de l'habiter."

My Dad, just as I like to remember him.

Always in ripped clothes, wild hair, tool in hand.

Taken by @idleriver many years ago in the early Round House days - dropped through my letterbox today. What a gift. My Dad hated having his photo taken - like me - and could look self-conscious. But these are beautifully natural.

Just a quick broadside pasted up on the walls of the old city to let you know that this Sunday 17th May in this the Year of Our Lord and Other Terrors I will be stalling out at Adams Antiques Fair in the Royal Horticultural Hall at the junction of Elverton Street and Vincent Square in the quarter of London known as Pimlico. I shall have with me a large glazed cabinet full of recently acquired antique fishing tackle for the soul including some rare London reels, a box or two of antiquarian angling books recently cleared from a library put together over decades, a pair of exquisite enamelled angling silver medals, priests in Victorian mahogany and fruitwood along with an array of smalls some Georgian some later. All upon the cloth for close inspection and purchase. Doors open at 10am and remain so until 4.30pm, there is a tea bar serving well made sausage rolls and Kit-Kats, all within earshot of Big Ben and a stone’s throw from the river. I look forward to your good company.

🌱 In the Garden This Month.

Our April gardening tips come from Simon Tiffin, co-founder of G&T, whose gorgeous West Dorset garden features in the May edition of House & Garden, out soon.

Simon will be showing guests around his gardens this May on our Earthly Paradise tour - and we will be stopping for a delicious picnic, too.

Here are Simon's top tips for April:

🌿 With the plant fair season getting underway, take stock of your borders and identify the gaps. Always best to have a shopping list when let loose on the stalls of tempting plants — otherwise you risk returning home with a boot-load of perennials and no planting plan.
🌷 Look at your flowering bulbs now and note where you'll need to make additions in the autumn. You will never remember come September.
🥕 As the weather — and soil — warms up, direct sowing into the kitchen garden starts in earnest.
🌱 Finish adding pea stick supports where needed.
✂️ Set the mower to a high-cut position and give the grass an early trim.
🪴 Start feeding your pots as growth gets going.
