This summer, Sharon Santmyer, a lecturer in the Intensive English Program at GSU, served as an English Language Specialist through the U.S. Department of State's English Language Specialist Program.

Her project, Smart Strategies for Resource-Limited English Learning in Caldas, brought together English teachers and teacher trainers across the Caldas region of Colombia through classroom observations, workshops, consultations, and conference presentations. The project focused on practical, research-informed strategies to foster learner autonomy, increase student engagement, and support English teaching in resource-limited classrooms.

Applied Linguistics & ESL alumna Katie Hibner's (M.A. ’24) passion for teaching has taken her from Georgia State University to classrooms in Jordan, Morocco, and China. This spring, she was selected by the U.S. Department of State Virtual English Language Educator Program to teach online courses to Mexico City police officers in preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup!

Hibner helped the officers improve their English listening and speaking abilities for the influx of international visitors traveling from around the world. She credits her "English for Specific Purposes" course at GSU with Professor Viviana Cortes for preparing her to design a course tailored to her students' needs. Congratulations, Katie, on making a global difference! #ShareYourStory
