🎨 Meet Ugoma Adegoke, founding director and curator of the Lagos-based gallery BLOOM Art (IG: @bloomartlagos). The latest exhibition she curated was the Tega Akpokona's solo show which opened in March, but it was cut short due to the pandemic.

Ugoma Adegoke is a creative entrepreneur, gallerist, and foremost cultural curator. She is a tireless community builder, arts advocate, a passionate art collector and a dynamic taste-maker. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
She firmly believes that the development and flourishing of a society begins with the appreciation and understanding of its culture. For her, private repatriation is fundamental to safeguarding Nigerian art, to make its culture and history accessible and significant to as many people as possible. As she puts it “in the small arts community we have in Nigeria, private ownership is crucial”. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A few years ago, she facilitated a major art sale and helped a sizable private collection of Nigerian art, which belonged to a Westerner who had cherished it since the 1970s - 1980s, to return home. She recounts this unprecedented sale in a heartfelt article published in CNN Style; a platform in which she shares her passion and commitment to Nigerian art, while nurturing the broader debate on repatriation, in all its forms.

Always with an eye on the young generation, which she supports and promotes, Ugoma’s most recent curation is the Tega Akpokona’s solo exhibition (IG: @akpokonatega ). It opened 2 months ago in Lagos, featuring a selection of recent paintings by the emerging Nigerian artist. The exhibition brought together a diverse array of fictional characters from Akpokona’s universe, who seem to be playing with light and darkness, as Tega Akpokona plays with the brushstrokes.

The world has changed in ways that none of us could have ever conceived. Less than two months ago (14 February 2020 to be precise) I was the special guest of honour at a cocktail reception in Abuja hosted by the Ambassador of France to Nigeria, Monsieur Jérôme PASQUIER, to recognize and celebrate me for my work in culture and the arts in Nigeria.

A beautiful new embassy residence; champagne flowing; delicious French delicacies; progressive guests from government, business, civil society and the cultural world; my two besties and a special ambience filled with that signature French joie de vivre, which somehow culminated in me performing “Sweet Thing” by Chaka Khan at the request of my host and ably accompanied by guests with improvised musical instruments - spoons, flutes, feet, snapping fingers and even one taut stomach which provided percussive sound. It was a perfect evening and one of the greatest moments of my life - to be celebrated and recognized in such a way. Thank you, my French friends. Bisous!

I didn’t plan to share this day publicly, but as the new quarter begins in a locked down and afflicted new world, I think that it is fitting for me to share this moment - for my own catharsis and to lift you up.

As I said in my address on that night which was Valentine’s Day, “love is to be celebrated everyday”. Today is April 1st, 2020 - I am humbly reflecting on that lovely evening in February and anticipating what the world might become post COVID 19. Today (and everyday) I celebrate the shared love of art and culture which led to a great evening for Nigerian-French relations and harmonies; I celebrate the love of humanity which a true love of art inspires, and I celebrate the love (and power) that community and camaraderie wield.
I know (oh I know) that the combined manifestation of this LOVE, will be the leading force for redemption, rehabilitation, recovery and redirection in our world during and after Corona ... and I pray that we never ever ever again forget what really has always mattered and will always matter most - LOVE.

Happy belated Valentine’s Day World. Sending BIG love to people in every corner of the earth. I love you
