I am a deeply nosy person. Of course I went to @usga . I wanted to see. I wanted to see the crowds, the energy, all the stuff, the merch tent, the trophy club, the golf sim. I also wanted to see the land. I've driven through, I probably snuck onto the course once or twice in the middle of the night when I was younger, a few years ago I accompanied the boys and girls club for a photo op and peaked my head into the clubhouse. But all those times have been brief, rushed, secret. It's a private club after all and we are not welcome. Twice this week I've stepped foot at the acclaimed Shinnecock Hills Golf Course and was able to walk around freely. I was able to walk freely where my ancestors were laid to rest, where our men were forced to remove those ancestors, where many of our men proudly work. As a Shinnecock person, the golf course is a complicated place. There is pain and there is pride on those hills. I don't know what would make it right. They're never going to give the land back. I don't know if there's a dollar amount that can make it right. The land acknowledgement, tickets, and money were nice but that doesn't heal our generational hurt. I don't know how to fix the relationship between the Nation and the course but I hope this is a good start. I recently learned that Shinnecock is a notoriously difficult and windy course, I'd like to think the ancestors have something to do with it. At least they have to work for it. I understand if others stayed home. I understand if others love golf. I'm glad I went. I was able to fill the air with auntie laughs and hopefully made some people uncomfortable with my Stolen Hills shirt from @ifno___ . Lastly, you're lying if you say golf is fun to watch in person and you know it. It's impossible to see! #shinnecockstrong

Nitauke Williams, photographed in his home office on the Shinnecock Reservation. Nitauke is the creator of Manowesas, a popular clothing brand. The young people of Shinnecock often wear shirts, hoodies, and sweatpants with a bold M or IFNO stamped on them. To Nitauke, Manowesas is more than a clothing line—it’s a lifestyle brand. As a kid, he was influenced by the older boys in his family who liked nice things, especially clothes. That early influence stayed with him, and he started IFNO in college, inspired to create his own brand after questioning the value and meaning behind the designer clothes he was buying. Manowesas—his middle name, which translates to Fearlessness or I Fear No One—is rooted in self-expression, self-love, self-confidence, and empowerment. He wants people to feel better about themselves when they wear his clothes—like they’re invincible. The brand is an extension of him and his life journey; as he grows older and wiser, the brand grows and changes as well. Beyond the world of fashion, Nitauke considers himself first and foremost an artist. His creative process is constantly shifting and expanding, shaped by curiosity and intuition. At the core of everything he does is a single driving force: the desire to create—freely, boldly, and without limits. -- Nitauke is featured in "Faces of the Stony Shore", a solo exhibition combining photography and written biographies highlighting Shinnecock people. "Faces of the Stony Shore" is currently on display at Ma's House through February 14. @mashousestudio is open on Thursday and Sundays, 10am-5pm or by appointment.
