One of my favorite experiences was walking amongst a large colony of marine iguanas on the island of Santa Cruz in the Galapagos. Charles Darwin called them “hideous”, but they were an important species in helping Darwin form his theory of evolution by natural selection. Marine Iguanas are the only seagoing lizards in the world and can only be found in the Galapagos. How did these creatures get to the Galapagos? Scientists believe that land dwelling iguanas from South America must have drifted out to sea millions of years ago on logs or other debris, eventually landing in the Galapagos. This must have been quite a journey, since the Galapagos is six hundred miles from South America. These creatures have adapted well to the Galapagos. Their diet consists mainly of green algae that grows on and sticks to volcanic rocks underwater. Marine Iguanas square noses and razor teeth gives them the ability to get their mouths much closer to the algae underwater and pull it off the rocks. Longer claws give them the ability cling to underwater rocks in the face of strong currents. The Galapagos is a perfect habitat. Cold ocean water surrounds the islands and the Galapagos sits on the equator. Being cold blooded, they leave the coldness of the water to warm up in the strong sun of the equator. Another unique feature is they rid themselves of the excess salt from the ocean by having special glands in their nostrils by spitting the salt out from their blood through their noses. I could have spent hours walking amongst these Godzilla looking creatures. Their calm demeanor almost put me into a dream like mood.#sonyalpha #sony #sonyalphasclub #sonycamera #sonyimage #sonyphotographer #galapagos #photooftheday📷 #photoofthedays #picoftheday #picoftheday📷 #photographyislife #photolovers #wildlifephotography #wildlife_perfection #natgeotravel #natgeohub #instagram #instagramer #instagramers #instagramersgallery#ınstagood #instagoods #instagoodmyphoto #wanderlusting #wanderluster#naturelover #natureaddict#naturegram#nature_good
