To my late father’s direct descendants (including my brother, not pictured), hold your heads. Daddy and G-Daddy’s life was a masterpiece as robust as his music collection. Each of us is a sample, an interlude, and an outro that carries his melody into eternity. Even though his final verse has been sung, his melody doesn’t end. It still plays in the background of the lives we live to honor his legacy.

If I could have spoken at your service, I would have told of how the profound impression you made on me shapes nearly every aspect of my life and how your last act of love was patiently waiting for me to leave the room so you could finally sleep eternally 🫶🏾

Through grief and a myriad of complex circumstances, my sister and I honored our father as best we could by putting our collective talents together and planning his entire service as a duet.

Not only did we design and format his obituaries, but we styled his memorial tribute at the altar before guests arrived.

And my sister arranged the beautiful florals flanking his photos.

The church that anchored my father’s side of the family held the service that would honor his life and legacy.

I’ve got three anchors of my own that remind me to keep growing, even through grief. ⚓️⚓️⚓️

My dad was a layered man, but at the core of his nuances were music, fashion, and FOOD. It was only right we have a second repast at an upscale steakhouse. But we forgot to order dessert first like Daddy always did 🤦🏾‍♀️

To my brother, THANK YOU for how you showed up during this season. You are now the patriarch of Daddy’s tribe 👑. And to my mom and last living parent, every hug you gave and every tear you saw me cry during this process has only strengthened our bond. None of us would be here without Daddy and YOU 💐.

To Erick Jarmon, Sr., Tech 946, job well done. I’ll keep listening to these voicemails, they’ll keep us tethered until we meet again 📞🥹🕊️

“Intentional” has been sitting in my spirit lately; reminding me to move with purpose, with clarity, with love. So that’s what I’m doing. When my team and I sat down, we agreed that this season calls for giving “Roses While We’re Here” to the people and places that open doors, hold space, and pour into others; without hesitation.

This is the first of a 2-part series, and I’m starting with someone who is truly one of one: my friend, my brother; the incomparable Matt Hennessy of @vsopstudios. We recently had the honor of partnering with @makeawishamerica | @wishillinois to help make a wish come true, and Matt showed up with no ceiling, no limits, just a full heart and an open hand. He helped create an unforgettable moment for the young person receiving the wish, and I’m still moved by it. Matt, thank you for who you are to me, and to our entire music community. These ROSES are yours. 🌹
