Prove you're not a robot...

In a not-too-distant future the Rossum Corporation has done the impossible: created machines indistinguishable from humans. Built to serve, programmed to obey and ready to be rolled out worldwide. 🦾

But when idealistic activist Helen gets involved, these perfect workers begin to dream of freedom and the system starts to glitch.

As the line between human and machine blurs, what does it really mean to be alive?

🗣️ “ROBOTA” @headlongtheatre 🎭
@schwarzmancentre till 18th July 💫

What a real dream to have worked with this phenomenal company! The cast are incredible and getting to work with this level of mastery is such an honour. Thank you all for the love and care in detail. Being fiercely encouraged by @royal_weise_artist @tramainetra_ @ellaroad to go for the the inner most intrinsic detailed work was an absolute dream for a creative. From the stage management team to the design team, what a gorgeous project to be apart of. Here’s to a magical run! ✨

‘In 1920, playwright Karel Čapek imagined a world of A.I. and rebellion, inspiring and influencing a century of sci-fi cinema. 100 years later, Headlong reawakens his visionary play R.U.R. as ROBOTA – high-voltage theatre for the age of artificial intelligence. In a not-too-distant future the Rossum Corporation has done the impossible: created machines indistinguishable from humans. Built to serve, programmed to obey and ready to be rolled out worldwide. But when idealistic activist Helen gets involved, these perfect workers begin to dream of freedom and the system starts to glitch. As the line between human and machine blurs, how do we hold on to our humanity? Blending origin story with sci-fi, myth with machine, this is a smart, timely and often funny look at what it means to truly be alive. Following our “fascinating” (Financial Times ⭐⭐⭐⭐) reinvention of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, ROBOTA is an intriguing new take on a Czech classic.

📣 Here's your first look at ROBOTA ‼️🤖

In 1920 Karel Čapek wrote a truly world-changing play. A visionary work which influenced a century of sci-fi and gave us the word “robot”. 🤖

Over 100 years later writer Ella Road (Black Mirror/Dr Who) has reimagined it as ROBOTA: high voltage theatre for the AI age.

Idealistic activist Helen takes on the Rossum Corporation as they get ready to roll out their ‘living AI’ worldwide. But as the line between human and machine blurs, how do we hold onto our humanity?

Directed by Roy Alexander Weise, ROBOTA is playing now at the Schwarzman Centre until the 18th July. Don’t miss this funny and thought-provoking look at one of the most pressing questions of our time.

🎥 Film fanatics and Letterboxd lovers! If you’ve ever seen a single film with a robot in it, chances are that it’s been influenced by Čapek’s R.U.R.

🤓☝️ did you know that Čapek actually coined the term ‘robot’?? Ian did!
