IN GOOD REPAIR - a few impressions of the last work * Ovalhalle, MQ Vienna * October 17 * 16:00-19:00 BA3 / IKA / CMT / with Eleni Palles & Michelle Howard Broken things. Fixed. Transformed. On display. What does it mean to keep something “in good repair”? Not going back to the original, but caring, mending and letting things slowly evolve. This semester, we took broken tools, machines and objects and gave them a second life. Come see what became of them. See you there! #ingoodrepair #repair #maintenance #architecture #akbild

What does methodologically nuanced, pluralistic research in architectural history look like? How does it work in practice? Can only contemporary theories such as gender, queer, and de- and postcolonial studies grasp their approaches? What does the epistemology of modernity nevertheless achieve? Or is the concept of academic research changing – and with it the entire epistemic system upon which architectural history also rests? Do AI models help or hinder this reorientation? And how can these considerations be incorporated into teaching in concrete terms? These and other questions are to be raised – and perhaps also answered – in the Lecture Series for the 2026/2027 academic year at the Institute of Art and Architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Architectural historians from various backgrounds who are engaged with these questions will be invited to present and discuss their research approaches from this perspective. Theories of Teaching Architectural History IKA Lecture Series 2026/2027 Curated by Angelika Schnell 17.10, 30.11., 14.12.2026 Schillerplatz 3, Room 211a Lectures at 19 h each Language: English 📸Design by Hannah Sakai and Nik Thoenen @ika.studios.akbild #akbild

LINE / THREAD / ROPE An International Workshop with Georg Winner & Joanna Zabielska Before engines, before steel cables, there was rope. In this workshop as a part of Ignored Technology project, we return to rope as a fundamental technology: exploring tension, twist, fibres, pulling, lifting and binding through both hands-on making and digital experimentation. Working collectively, participants will deconstruct and construct ropes, experiment with reused and hybrid materials, develop tools for rope-making, and investigate historical fibre technologies — from bast fibres and withies to ropes used in alpine agriculture and sailing. Taking place at Prospekthof, a former scenography building where ropes once worked invisibly behind the scenes, the workshop will use the scale of the space to make rope collectively. Georg Winner is a wood and natural-fibre technologist specialising in prehistoric and historical uses of wood and fibre. His practice combines material research, traditional craftsmanship and sustainable technologies, including rope-making, weaving and the reconstruction of historical tools. Joanna Zabielska works at the intersection of digital art, design and architecture. Through 3D scanning, photogrammetry and motion capture, she explores how physical materials, spatial data and digital craftsmanship can generate new forms of world-building. 📍 Prospekthof, Vienna 👥 Georg Winner & Joanna Zabielska 🧵 Hands-on + digital #IgnoredTechnology #Architecture #Craft

THREADING ARCHITECTURE Towards a More Open and Evolving Architectural Practice What can knitting teach us about architecture? Jelena Mitrović and Davor Ereš explore knitting as more than a craft or technique — as a way of thinking, structuring and making that embraces transformation, adaptation and uncertainty. Drawing on Unraveling: New Spaces, presented at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale, the lecture explores how a continuous thread can become structure, form and space — and how the same process can be reversed, unraveled and transformed into something new. Through the dextrous hand, material intelligence and collective experimentation, the lecture asks how architecture might move beyond fixed forms and remain open to continuous transformation. 📍 Prospekthof, Lehárgasse 6–8, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna 📅 20 November 2026 🕖 7 PM Jelena Mitrović is architect and Assistant Professor at Union – Nikola Tesla University in Belgrade, and co-founder of Poligon Platform. Her work brings together architectural pedagogy, practice and exhibition-making, focusing on the theory of architectural practice and the changing position of the architect today. Her doctoral research examines the inconsistency of the modernist architect’s position in 21st-century practice. Davor Ereš is architect and researcher at the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory, and co-founder of Poligon Platform. His work focuses on learning through architecture, contemporary architectural practice and collaborative forms of research and pedagogy. Through workshops across Europe, he explores architecture as an open process of experimentation, knowledge production and material transformation.

MEET CMT — CONSTRUCTION, MATERIALS & TECHNOLOGY The Platform for Construction, Materials and Technology (CMT) is part of the Institute of Art and Architecture (IKA) at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, led by Univ.-Prof. Dipl.-Arch. Michelle Howard. Through research and teaching, CMT investigates the mutual conditions and dependencies between humans, climate and environments — making these relationships visible and using them as active tools for architectural experimentation. The platform also looks at the hidden power of spatial systems: how the environments we construct shape our relationships, behaviours and possibilities. Rather than simplifying this complexity, CMT uses it as a starting point for developing projects with complex construction programmes and for exploring how architectural systems can accommodate and celebrate complexity. What happens when we reconsider the roles of both old and new materials? Through combination of spatial systems, material research, environmental conditions and technological experimentation, CMT creates a context in which architecture can be investigated as a complex, interconnected practice. Michelle Howard is an architect, researcher and professor of art and architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. She leads CMT and has developed a body of teaching and research around construction, materials, technology and experimental architectural practice. Her work explores how material processes and often overlooked forms of making can become sites for architectural research and innovation. Adam Hudec is an architect, researcher and co-founder of Dusts Institute, a research enterprise working across architecture, art and environmental research. Through his work, Adam’s interest is in material knowledge, environmental awareness and experimental ways of making — connecting architectural research with questions of care, maintenance, ecology and the hidden processes that shape our built environment. #IgnoredTechnology #Architecture #Craft #LowTech #DigitalInnovation

WHAT IF THE TECHNOLOGIES WE NEED FOR THE FUTURE ARE NOT NECESSARLY NEW? Ignored Technology is an international research project that eclaims low-tech, craft-based, anti-patriarchal and other overlooked practices as technologies worth learning from, developing and investing in. The project asks what happens when knowledge that has been sidelined — because it was considered too ordinary, too slow, too local, too difficult to commodify, or excluded by patriarchal and colonial systems — is brought back into focus. Ignored Technology connects craft and digital innovation, creating new ways of learning, making, researching and co-creating that are more sustainable, inclusive and transformative. The project began in 2019, initiated by Michelle Howard at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (AKBILD). In 2021, Veronika Miškovičová from UMPRUM and Adam Hudec from AKBILD began organising annual workshops exploring these questions with students supported by bilaterail funding scheme of Czech Republic and Austria AKTION.In 2025, this ongoing collaboration grew into a partnership between AKBILD Vienna, UMPRUM Prague and AFAD Bratislava — bringing together overlapping interests in architecture, technology, craft and inclusive education. Today, our collective bases are Vienna, Prague and Bratislava.Through workshops, joint events and our newly developed open-source platform, we ask: What knowledge, skills and technologies have we overlooked? And more importantly: What could happen if we started paying attention to them again? #IgnoredTechnology #Architecture #Craft
