I spent lots of August in Finland and have just posted a write up of those trips (link in bio and in comments).

The visits were partly to learn about how metal is seen in the place known as the "Capital of Metal". And they were partly because some ridiculously strong festival line ups brought lots of the bands I needed to learn from into Helsinki over the space of a few weeks. Blackbraid, Mawiza, Iotunn, Unearthly Rites and many others in the same place was a chance I had to take, and I learnt more from the mix of interviews and informal chats with musicians and festival organisers than I could have hoped.

The photos contain some of the bands from Hellsinki Metal Festival and Helsinki Deathfest - including Finnish bands like Ikinä, Numento, and Cyan Kicks as well global musicians including Opeth, Nergal, and Carcass.

I always like to do the research that involves reading books and articles in situ, so it was great to be able to growing body of writing on Finnish metal scenes, by metal scholars like Charlotte Doesberg (on the Kalevala in metal) and Toni Matti Karjalainen (on the formation of the Finnish metal scene), while out in forests and on rivers among ospreys and eagles (I hope Blackbraid, Mawiza & Iotunn might've approved).

I came back with a strong sense of how localised the themes and scenes of metal in Finland actually are, and how much less there's a unifying sense of Finnishness than I'd expected. I also hadn't realised before travelling just how suddenly the links between metal and Finnishness had emerged around the start of the century (and how completely unforeseeable they would've been before).

I also came back having seen some of the best sets I've ever witnessed - and with new appreciation (thanks to Mawiza especially) of the global power of depictions in metal of specific places and the apparently localised outlooks attached to them.

As well as posting a write up on these things, a session I recorded for a podcast based in Helsinki - 10,000 Hours of Indie - just went live (link also in comments & bio). Can't wait to get back to Finland to keep trying to fathom a place that still feels to me like a metal enigma.

Oi kesä. Olit niin kaunis.
Ja kaikki ihmiset ympärillä. Oon jotenkin koko ajan sellaisen liikutuksen kynnyksellä, jossa toisinaan ihan kiemurtelee.

For Ikinä, 2026 has been a defining year. First came the release of Valkyria, an intense and emotional album. Then, at Hellsinki Metal Festival, they delivered a standout performance joined by The Choir of Hecate, whose dramatic vocal layers amplified the band’s already explosive energy.
After the show, Katariina Sorsa and Tuuli Paju sat down with The Offering to reflect on the adrenaline of the performance, the intense month of preparation leading up to it, and the importance of celebrating womanhood, alongside the realities of motherhood in the music industry and the persistent gatekeepers of metal. They also opened up about the journey behind their latest album and what 2027 may hold for Ikinä.

Hellsinki Metal Festival 2026 🖤

¡Hola!
