ZAURE by Iklima Babangida Shehu & Aisha Bindawa Suleiman

At the Roots and Roofs Final Showcase, ZAURE was brought to life through an immersive representation of the traditional Zaure. Photographs further told the stories of the people, spaces and traditions behind the project, alongside a video presentation depicting the team’s reinterpretation of the Zaure.

There’s something about seeing a space come together.

From an empty room to a carefully curated showcase, every corner of Roots & Roofs took shape through layers of thought, material, detail and intention.

Looking back, these spaces remain a quiet reflection of what the project set out to explore, the relationship between indigenous knowledge, culture, design and the ways we imagine our built environment.

Looking back at the Roots & Roofs exhibition in Abuja, there are the moments that made the experience so rich: conversations across the room, quiet encounters with the work, shared laughter, performances, new connections and the many faces that became part of the experience.

The final showcase of Roots and Roofs brought together months of research, dialogue, making, and reflection into one shared experience.

Dignitaries, architects, designers, storytellers, mentors and curious minds came together to have wonderful conversations.

Guess where I found myself yesterday? 👀

I had the opportunity to attend the Roots and Roofs exhibition at @kolanutgallery where I experienced the incredible works of @mvsteea , @iklimababangida , @iamsulaiman.am @abubakarbabaisamaidoki @simsam_v , @ayshabdw , @fatiabubakarr , @ariaye_taribo , @_masquradee , @miralux_elite , @wrootless , @mobola_fisayo and many other amazing creatives who came together to showcase their talents.

The @paid_rootsandroofs exhibition, organized by the Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization @cbaac77 under the leadership of @aishaak49 , was truly inspiring. Beyond the beautiful artworks, it was a reminder of what is possible when artists and cultural practitioners come together to tell meaningful stories.

And guess what? 😄 It also turned into a mini Building Bridges reunion! It was so good catching up with our guardian angel @styleefiko alongside fellow Cohort 5 members of building bridges, @obinna_melody_ and @voice_it_like_r . Moments like these remind me that the connections we built during the residency continue long after the programme ends.

If you’re in Abuja, the exhibition is still open until tomorrow, Sunday, 26th July 2026. It’s definitely worth a visit!
