One of the things I appreciate the most about the art scene in the Hamptons, which many people don’t know, is the strong sense of community here, of people who really love and cherish the history and legacy of the many artists who’ve lived and worked here. There is real pride in this legacy, and a constant striving to learn more and bring forgotten artists (especially women) to awareness. I am so grateful for all the people who came to see my work. My exhibition is up until July 17th. I’m around until then. Please let me know if you plan to come see it, I’ll be happy to meet you in the gallery. If you want to come outside of gallery hours (Wed-Fri 11-5pm) please email exhibition@framptonco.com to make an appointment 🙏🤍 openings photos: @strifflerphoto_interiors

“Flags, Fire Island”, a short film by @edgarmosa and me that was continuously projected at the @limuseum for their show last summer “Fire Island: The Art of Liberation”.

This short, which we’re sharing online for the first time, documents a series of flag installations that Edgar and I did in Fire Island Pines from 2019 to 2023.

Edgar and I would often fly these flags without announcing them. We would make a decision in the spur of the moment when the light and wind were right. Usually that meant we chose times when the beach was empty. The only people who saw them were those who happened to be passing by, no more than a handful in most cases.

On one occasion, we put up the biggest installation right before sunset. There were almost fifty holes to dig, fifty flags to mount, fifty bamboo poles to raise and secure. Edgar and I were exhausted. But the flags have a way of attracting people, and they did. We were joined by a stranger who had been walking his dog and a handful of friends who had just wandered down to the beach by chance.

Our little group sat under the flags as the remnants of the sunset dimmed away. The flags did what they often do; they hypnotized us. I remember that feeling of calm as vividly as a childhood sense memory. I remember feeling proud that the work we had made was having its effect on our little audience. I remember liking that there were so few of us, because it made the moment feel all the more like a treasure.

Over the past couple years, I’ve made several trips out to Fire Island to capture a number of @bond_architecture ‘s projects there (including their own wonderful house near the beach). Love it there, love how BoND’s work fits into the landscape of the Pines, and I think the new story in AD, written by @samuelcochran , really captures the vibe. Thank you BoND guys, @amyastley @michaelsshome , @samuelcochran , @shanikravetz and everyone!

My first ever photograph of a urinal made it all the way to the pages of @archdigest !! Seriously, though, I’m legit proud (and it’s weirdly beautiful?). Can’t stop thinking about the #nicolasdestael show at @museedartmodernedeparis and this, the sexiest painting of salad ever made. Each painting seems hard-won, fought for, while at the same time, somehow effortless, paintings that just are what they are (a salad, a tugboat) and don’t try too hard to be everything at once. Clunky, ham-fisted objects fit together in the most stylish way.

De Staël has been a touchstone for me since college and it was a relief to see the artist’s entire catalog and to find it energizing — I left the museum wanting to make paintings — which is I think the best barometer of a great painting show.
